About the Author
Deborah Licht is a Professor of Psychology and co-chair of the Department of Psychology at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has had over two decades of teaching and research experience in a variety of settings, ranging from a small private university in the midwest to a large public university in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has taught introductory psychology, psychology of the workplace, abnormal psychology, the history of psychology, child development, and elementary statistics. She has experience in traditional, online, and hybrid courses, and is particularly inspired by first-generation college students who turn to community colleges to pursue their education. She received her Bachelor of Science in psychology from Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio; a Master’s Degree in clinical psychology from the University of Dayton; and a PhD from Harvard University, in experimental psychopathology in 2001. She continues to be interested in research on causal beliefs and their influence on behavior, particularly in relation to how college students think about their successes and failures as they pursue their degrees.

Misty Hull is a Professor of Psychology and co-chair of the Department of Psychology at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She has taught a range of psychology courses at Pikes Peak Community College, including introductory psychology, human sexuality, and social psychology in a variety of delivery formats (traditional, online, and hybrid). Her love of teaching comes through in her dedication to mentoring new and part-time faculty in the teaching of psychology. She received her Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and her Master’s in Professional Counseling at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado. She has served in a variety of administrative roles at Pikes Peak Community College, including interim Associate Dean, and Coordinator of the Student Crisis Counseling Office. In addition, she has helped to develop the state system’s approach to teaching psychology, as the state psychology discipline chair of the Colorado Community College System from 2002-2010. One of her many professional interests includes research on the impact of student persistence in higher education.

Coco Ballantyne is a New York-based journalist and science writer with a special interest in psychology. Before joining forces with Misty Hull and Deborah Licht to write Scientific American: Psychology, Coco worked as a reporter for Scientific American online, covering health, medicine, and neuroscience beats. She contributed to Discover magazine and Nature Medicine while earning her masters in journalism from Columbia University, where she received the Horgan Prize for Excellence in Science Writing. Prior to her journalistic career, Coco worked as a teacher and tutor, helping high school and college students prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, GRE, and MCAT. She also worked as a physics and math teacher at Eastside College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto, California, and as a human biology course assistant at Stanford University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree.

BOOK IS NOT IN LINE WITH RECENT RESEARCH ON SEVERAL AREAS. DO NOT BUY.

Certain aspects of the book is not in line with recent research on topics such as intelligence, androgyny, and linguistics. Denied Chomsky's theory completely forgetting that Chomsky does specify that learning a language instantaneously happens within high levels of brain plasticity. Also literally said for intellectual disability 'delay in thinking,...' What??? Too vague, there are many types of thinking. [b]They presented a nearly century-old study on giftedness, which seemed to deny the ones who aren't successful in life their giftedness. Anyone who thinks very critically about their work will recognize the absurdities in working for private owners, or even employing others.[/b] The study also did not take the circumstantial factors involved in education, research back then was very underdeveloped and only those who fit the physical model of giftedness were identified, and therefore studied. They also made a false distinction that if one has trouble with number concepts, money, etc, they are intellectually challenged, which is not true. Put down this book after a few chapters, don't trust it anymore. They implied that androgyny is a purely physical characteristic. For professors whom have apparently done a decade of research this book does not show it. Please read the Oxford Companion to the Mind and Google Scholar instead. I have no idea why this book is used so prolifically.

I bought this from my school library. It is way overpriced and poorly written and sexist. IT IS THE WORSE psychology book on the market.

I'm halfway through a psychology course using this text, and I don't care for it (and hate the course). The text might as well be replaced with long list of definitions, ancient theories, and experimental details to memorize, because that is basically all it is. As I mention later, when I sit down and read a chapter out of Myers 'Psychology' book, it comes off as interesting. This book feels thin and clinical - they rush from one theory to another flinging jargon around madly, and it just feels like a "Schaum's Outline of (Historical) Psychology". It is not a pleasure to read.

Given that it seems to be par for the course in introductory psychology, I didn't want to be too harsh (my venom is more aimed at educational psychologists in general, who turn the fascinating field of psychology into an archaeological display for every theory ever concocted (no matter how irrelevant or absurd these days, like Freud). I once heard somebody say that psychology education has a hoarding problem, and that seems to describe it pretty well.

There isn't nearly enough emphasis put on contemporary knowledge (e.g. brain scan technology, cellular biology and biochemistry, etc). For example, the chapter on human development is basically reduced to describing the steps from Piaget, Kohlberg, and Erikson, but essentially nothing on why those steps occur due with brain development, or any significant details on what has been learned since 1950. Going through many of the chapters, if one didn't read anything but the book, one would think that these historical theories are still "state of the art". Analogously, although the book tries to paint psychology as a scientific endeavor, it conspicuously neglects to mention how many of the classic theories disastrously don't follow scientific processes, or don't even constitute theories in a scientific sense at all (e.g. Piaget using his own kids as an experimental group, having no control group, and using leading questions in his research).

On the positive side, for a book that disappointingly doesn't break any new ground, it is fairly well written, and has pretty good questions and practice quizzes. The stories that each chapter follows to try and help emphasize the chapter points are decent, although they contain a gigantic streak of political correctness.

I picked up a used copy of Myers 10th Edition of 'Psychology', and I prefer that book (although I still detest the idiom in which it resides). It has better examples, more details to flesh out the topics (so it doesn't appear to be what it actually is - a laundry list of facts to absorb via rote learning), and does a far better job of following up each antediluvian theory with a critical assessment of how and where it holds up with respect to contemporary knowledge.
