The 10 years' worth of research cited in Successful Aging reveal some flabbergasting facts about health in later life. For example, an inactive person is worse off, health-wise, than a smoker who exercises regularly. And your lifestyle and attitude are significantly more important than your genes in determining whether or not your golden years are healthy ones--even if you have a genetic predisposition for developing Alzheimer's, arthritis, cancer, or other serious health problems.

Rowe and Kahn start with a thorough breakdown of nutritional advice, including a rundown of the many vitamins and other nutrients that those older than 60 are in particular need of. Accessible and upbeat, this report interprets the findings of the MacArthur Foundation Study of Successful Aging, a long-term, multidisciplinary research program designed to examine the genetic, biomedical, behavioral and social factors that determine how well we age. Rowe, president of Mount Sinai Hospital, chairs the Foundation's Research Network on Successful Aging, and Kuhn, professor of psychology and public health at the University of Michigan, is a member of that group. They begin by citing the study outcomes to effectively destroy some common negative myths about aging (e.g., that illness accompanies aging or that mental capacity diminishes with age). Next they define successful aging as having three components: low risk of disease and disability; high mental and physical function; and active engagement with life. Emphasizing that lifestyle choices are more important than heredity, they spell out the choices the elderly can make to enhance each component. While focusing on what to do, they also make clear what not do to (e.g., they warn against such popular anti-aging remedies as DHEA and human growth hormone). They then turn to society's role in promoting successful aging. Finding that the elderly are one of the country's great underutilized productive resources, they propose that improving the mix of education, work and leisure throughout life would keep workers in the labor force longer, and they call on the government to make the necessary regulatory changes. Gerontologist Rowe and psychologist Kahn report on a 10-year, MacArthur Foundation^-funded inquiry into "successful aging" --that is, remaining healthy, vigorous, mentally acute, and independent well into the ninth and tenth decades of life. Knowing how to do this is becoming crucial to ever more people as American life expectancy steadily increases to a full century. First dashing six myths about old age (e.g., "To be old is to be sick" and "The elderly don't pull their own weight"), they outline the structure of successful aging, contrast it with "usual aging" (a state of imminent physical breakdown), and argue against the presumption that genetic inheritance is a more powerful determinant of longevity and healthiness than are such variables as nutrition and social interaction. Separate chapters illustrate, with the experience of the study's elderly subjects, that good diet and exercise, maintaining and enhancing mental functions, positive social connections, and productive work are essential to living well while living longer. In conclusion, Rowe and Kahn recommend three large changes in social awareness: reconceptualize the course of life to accommodate increasing longevity, take account of the unpaid labor (e.g., voluntary work, caretaking) that is so much the work of elderly people, and relax the allocations of study, work, and leisure to discrete stages of life. Further, they note barriers to change and suggest governmental measures for overcoming them. DARN GOOD BOOK

While some may object to these "counterintuitive" findings, this book is in line with the vast majority of recent research in the field of gerontology. The notes at the back of the book give plenty of evidence to back up the claims here, too! In other words, it's accurate -- maybe not obvious, or what people want to hear, but accurate. That's what I wanted, and I think it's what most people can use. The extent to which one's own actions are responsible for how one ages is kind of scary, but also a powerful piece of knowledge. Also, it's great to know how *late* you can start doing a lot of things to improve your later life.
This book is also clear, consise and helpful. It's available in large print too - because just because your eyesight is going doesn't mean it's too late to improve your health by gaining and applying knowledge! If you find that you are aging or know someone who is, read this book!

Successful Aging

I stumbled upon the book strictly by accident and ended up paying full list price at Barnes and Noble. After seeing the really great prices on Amazon, I reluctently sat down to read a few chapters to try and get my monies worth. Wow. To say the book was enlightening would be to offer a dis-service to the multi-year McArthur Foundation Study. I picked up a few things from the book that most readers will not and that is basic assumptions that Private Foundations and Private Research gathers far more information about a subject than Government sponsored projects. It occured to me that Government has pretty muched screwed up Social Security as well as providing for long term health care in America. Successful Aging gives an alternative to spending your final years in a Nursing Home. The book is very well thought through, well researched and backed up with countless citations that give credit where credit is due. I found the book an enjoyable read, almost a primer. After reading this book, I ordered out about three hundred dollars worth of additional books on aging. That should tell you something. By the way, I ordered another copy of the book in out of print library edition to add to my collection. Great Book! Great Read! Don't get old without it!

Should be a classic

The research findings reported in Successful Aging have been supported in a new 20-year study by an independent group of researchers. The study by Becca Levy of Yale Univerisity, et al, was reported in 2002. Simply stated, we can decide now to live longer and better. Having a positive attitude about aging is alone responsible for extending life by 7.5 years, and years of activity and involvment, not suffering. This is a very worthwhile read, despite what some stupid old fools have written before.

Extensive problems and answers

Hammell puts forth to us that testing code is a rigorous discipline. He explains how to do this in the context of writing Java and using J2EE. The bedrock of his exposition is unit testing. This being Java, he shows how JUnit can be used to configure and run such tests, in a highly automated fashion. Hopefully, you will agree with his contention that indeed integrating JUnit and unit testing into the overall fabric of your development process is easy.

Building on this, he treats the important cases of testing a Java GUI and servlets and JSPs. The basic ideas are easy to grasp. There is a mass of example code that might obscure it, on first glance. But part of your skill set, which you need to develop, is that you should be able to hone down through the source code for the essential implementation of the ideas.

A nice trait of the book is the problem sets. And the lengthy answers to them. Rather unusual in books of these type. Typically, there aren't even any problems furnished. Let alone answers. If you end up using this book, you should avail yourself of the problems, for better learning.

Interesting case study in TDD

This is an interesting book. It takes a case study approach to teaching test driven development on an application to track sports results. It's pretty code heavy, which is something that I don't like about it. But given the topic that is to be expected.

Test Driven Development is a tough topic to teach. I respect APress for publishing a book with a unique design to try address this problem. It's well worth the time because this unique development approach can be very powerful when it's employed properly.

I recommend looking into Test Driven Development if you haven't already. And this is a reasonable place to start if you like to learn by example more than by reading process documentation like the Agile books.

Decent book with good examples. Worth buying

Overall I really liked this book. It has a lot good examples and practical advice on how to use TDD to build a J2EE application. The code I downloaded from the book's web site is nice also because besides the source code for the book you get a full build environment including a set of Ant build files that can be used to easily build and the run the examples. I really liked the chapter on servlet development using TDD since it showed me some tools and techniques that I hadn't seen before.

best translation i've read

My professor recomended this translation to me, and even as a novice in medieval studies, I still think it is far better than what I read in high school. Wright offers fascinating historical information at the beginning and termination of the story that give the non professional reader good insights and background on the implications and circumstances surrounding obscure events in the plot. A reader can walk away with both a great story and a better understanding of the complex time called the Dark Ages.

A terrific prose translation

David Wright has provided the reader with an excellent prose translation of the oldest known epic of any Teutonic people and the first important poem in Old English. It deals primarily with two central events in the life of the Geatish hero Beowulf. The first is concerned with his victory over the monster Grendel who had been attacking Heorot, the mead hall of the Danish king Hrothgar (John Gardner published a novel, "Grendel", in 1971, that takes Grendel's side in the story). The next day, Beowulf slays Grendel's mother who is attempting to try and avenge her son. In the second major event, taking place fifty years later, Beowulf fights a dragon; both are mortally wounded. Hygelac, King of the Gelts, is identified with the historical Chochilaicus, who raided the lower Rhine about 512 A. D. A young Beowulf was in that raid. When Chochilaicus was killed in a battle with the Franks about 520, he was succeeded by his son Heardred. This poem shows the importance, in a warrior society, of the relationship between the warrior and his lord. The poem, even though it contains threads of Christian commentary, is also concerned with the pagen view of immortality: the memory of a warrior's heroic acts. Also: that fate can be swayed by courage. "Fate often saves an undoomed man when his courage is good."

Epic Poem Becomes Clumsy Narrative

This is an extremely poor translation of Beowulf for anyone who wants more than just a narrative summary. Wright has, by his own admission, eliminated most of the poetic language from the original poem. The poetic, metaphor-like kennings seemed to him puzzles and word games which barred the reader from the real meanings of the narrative. The appositives used in place of actual names and pronouns he found "long-winded," and the poetic descriptions pretentious. Wright, apparently believing readers not intelligent enough to understand creative language, has given us a translation of Beowulf in the form of highly simplified prose, with few poetic descriptions or language that will "distract the reader" from the narrative. What remains is a clumsy, awkwardly worded translation which offers little to replace the poetry Wright has hacked out of it. Any lover of language will be deeply disappointed by this translation.

About the Author
Emma Farrarons, a French illustrator and graphic designer, is the author of the Mindfulness Coloring series. Born on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, Emma grew up in Paris. She was trained in illustration at the Edinburgh College of Art and l’�cole nationale sup�rieure des Arts D�coratifs. Having completed a textile and printmaking course at Capellag�rden school in Sweden, she has developed a particular love for pattern and fabric print and is inspired by French, Scandinavian, and Japanese design. She illustrates and designs books, posters, and stationery. When she is not drawing and designing, Emma enjoys cooking, sewing, travel, and practicing mindfulness. She lives in London with her Danish husband.

Alonso Pena, Ph.D.

Alonso Pena, Ph.D. is an SDA Professor at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan. He has worked as a quantitative analyst in the structured products group for Thomson Reuters Risk and for Unicredit Group in London and Milan. He holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge on Finite Element Analysis and the Certificate in Quantitative Finance (CQF) from 7city Learning, the U.K. He has lectured and supervised graduate and post-graduate students from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bocconi, Bergamo, Pavia, Castellanza, and the Politecnico di Milano. His area of expertise is the pricing of financial derivatives, in particular, structured products. He has publications in the fields of Quantitative Finance, applied mathematics, neuroscience, and the history of science. He has been awarded the Robert J. Melosh Medal—first prize for the best student paper on Finite Element Analysis, Duke University, USA; and the Rouse Ball Travelling Studentship in Mathematics, Trinity College, Cambridge. He has been to the Santa Fe Institute, USA, to study complex systems in social sciences. Needs thorough upgrade - not value for money

The book arrived in very good condition and one day before the seller promised. Unfortunately that's all that I can say was good about buying this book.
Apart from Preface, Index, Bibliography and Appendix, the book has only 96 pages. Within that, following topics are covered:
1. Financial Models - Derivatives of equity, exchange rate, interest rate and credit rating
2. Numerical Methods - Monte Carlo, Finite Difference Method and Binomial Tree
3. Code - covers models in #1 solved with MC and FDM only.
So the content itself is pretty light. But even within that, other issues persist:
1. References are a big issue. For example, Euler-Murayama discretization model is mentioned in multiple derivations, without mentioning any reference for understanding what is it or study it further. Another example - Vasicek model is mentioned during IRS without reference to any text.
2. There is no explanation or reason provided as to why a certain numerical model (like MC) is preferred over others (like FDM)
3. Typos exist in multiple pages
4. Fonts for formulas are inconsistent in size. They become large and then come back to normal size. Examples page 23, 24, 47, 90
5. For some concepts explanations are provided a few pages AFTER the concepts are introduced.

If this is to be regarded as an ADVANCED book in QF, then the above mentioned have to be corrected and the content enriched to make it value for money.

I don't know why this book has many positive reviews... I brought the book but it turned out a waste of money. The book is NOT "advanced". It covers some not-so-detailed simple pricing with some silly C++ coding.

Love the Bento box approach, simply genius. I have found uses for this model is other aspects of my work. The quality of c++ code could be better. But all in all this is a must have to programmers looking to make an impression in the quant world.
