The Beginning...
In October 2002, a little over a year after the September 11th terrorist attacks, the entire East Coast was gripped in fear by a series of random shootings and murders that occurred in and around our nation's capital.
The Panic...
These were innocent people, doing everyday things, from pumping gas, to reading a book on a park bench, mowing their lawn or just walking down the street. Most were gunned down in broad daylight, seemingly without any rhyme or reason. The shooters left no evidence other than a loud bang and a single bullet casing in their wake. The only connection between all of the victims was that there was no connection at all.
The panic that began with the first murder on the evening of October 2nd had spiraled out of control by October 22nd. 10 people were dead and at least 3 others were critically injured. Buses lined the front of schools to protect children as they entered and exited. Families were held captive in their own homes. Law enforcement had no real leads or answers and could not offer anything to calm the public's growing concerns. Nobody was safe.
The Capture...
Then 2 days later, in the early morning hours of October 24th, the D.C. Snipers were apprehended at a rest stop in Myersville, Maryland. They were caught as they slept in their dark blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice.
The Other Story...
Now, a decade later, Lee Boyd Malvo provides intimate personal details through a diary that was written 2 years after the shootings. The diary was brought out of the darkness through a relationship that was established by Anthony Meoli over 7 years of wanting to know the real story behind Lee's motivation for committing these crimes.
At first this relationship was initiated by letters, it was later fostered through personal phone calls which were taken on a weekly basis. It was during one of these calls that Lee revealed that a diary existed and it would explain the details of his life that have never fully been known. It would be a combination of traumatic life events that would become the catalysts of change, eventuallyleading him to choose the wrong path from which there would be no return.
What you will find inside Lee Boyd Malvo's fully authorized diary will shock you.

Compelling, Gut-wrenching, and Important to Hear
By Moorenaps
The "Interview with the DC Sniper" on CD is startlingly compelling and heart-wrenching. From the sound of the prison door banging at the beginning of the interview, I couldn't stop listening.
The interview doesn't focus on the violent, unspeakable crime of the killings. Told from prison, where Lee spends his time in solitary confinement, this is the self-told story of the boy who was pulled into horrifying crime by an insane father figure. With astonishing insight and clarity, Lee Malvo quietly describes a brutal childhood; one spent growing up without any love at all from anyone. Instead of love, his mother provided daily, horrific abuse. At the age when most children are in elementary school, he moved to the streets alone to escape her.
John Muhammed was the first person who showed him any attention or affection, and Lee's need for approval pushed him to trust John completely. The interview clearly illustrates the power of an abusive relationship and how easily it becomes for the abuser to brainwash the victim.
I thought about the interview for days after I listened, thinking that with a good childhood, Lee would have had a chance for a normal, productive life. It is the archetypal story of an intelligent, intuitive boy whose life was thrown away by his parents' selfishness and insanity.
With his experience in psychology, Anthony Meoli carefully takes a guiding role in the interview segments. He asks Lee questions to lead him to talk about his self-awareness and the intent of the crimes. It's not possible for a second to forget the horror of the crimes, but with Anthony's guidance, you begin to understand what went wrong and why the shootings happened.
Although this CD is a private interview, it is a strong commentary on societal expectations and parenting. I think the CD would be extremely valuable for anyone working in the social work or in juvenile justice areas. As you listen and consider this appalling outcome of parental abuse, you are branded with a vivid and unforgettable worst-case scenario. It's a true story that children's service case workers will remember throughout their years of work.

Perfect companion to the book
By Raj
I got this CD wondering if it expanded on the topics in the book, 'Diary of the D.C. Sniper,' and wanting to hear those life events of Lee Boyd Malvo's life with his own voice and how he came across in person; I didn't come away disappointed. First off, Mr. Meoli did a phenomenal job interviewing Mr. Malvo throughout the numerous prison conversations they had over the telephone. Mr. Meoli came prepared to ask him pertinent questions, some pretty tough to hear (i.e. childhood abuse, sexual molestation, suicide attempts, emotions upon committing the first homicide, etc.), but he did so respectfully, and would follow up where necessary, garnering some fascinating details from Mr. Malvo. As the nature of the interviews were never confrontational, it made the audio CD easy to listen to and the sixty six minutes were over before I knew it.
As for Mr. Malvo in this CD, he comes across disarmingly normal. He wasn't afraid to answer any of Mr. Meoli's questions, and seemed very honest in his answers. His description of meeting and being with John Allen Muhammad were intense. To HEAR Mr. Malvo's account of John Allen Muhammad's personal philosophies and justification for their killings was chilling, to say the least. Mr. Malvo's intelligence comes through in his answers and is genuine, articulate, and even keeled in talking with Mr. Meoli. In fact, you feel sympathetic towards Mr. Malvo as the CD progresses, and almost forget he's a serial killer. FANTASTIC audio CD, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This interview is very thought provoking
By EricWH
Chilling! The perfect companion to the book 'The Diary of the D.C. Sniper.
Listening to the CD brings the reality of this case to life from the Recording at the beginning of the calls to the noises and other inmates that you can hear in the background.
Listening to the CD, you cannot help but to put yourself in Malvo's place. I found myself questioning the reasons did his crimes. Was it because of his horrible childhood and upbringing? Was it something much more sinister in the way John Muhammad courted him? ...or was all that told as to make an excuse for his murders? I found myself still questioning just this, days after listening to this chilling audio interview/phone call.
This project, to me, seems to have been done with one thing in mind, to tell the story in way of the diary and let you, the reader decide for yourself why these crimes happened and what exactly the factors were that caused the horrible chain of events of the Beltway sniper attacks.
It is very evident that this book was a painstaking process on the parts of both Malvo and Mr. Anthony Meoli. The entire work, the book and the cd paint a very vivid picture and the recordings stay with you. I found my mind, during daily activities, going back and back to the recording. It definitely provokes thought and is an excellent exorcise in the social and/or the psychology of a killer.
The CD itself is an excellent study of the mind of a killer. The recording stays with you and are very thought provoking. Excellent and very well done.
