Track or road, this is about the forces that apply

This book is all about the general theory behind suspension, frames, and tires. It provides a host of formulas complete with supporting graphics. Great stuff to impress your friends. What this book is not is a how-to manual for setting up a race bike, and/or resolving the likes or real world scenarios you would encounter on or off the track. The chapter on engines is mostly about vibrations, forces of rotations, and how they bolt into frames. The language conversion (Italian to English) is proper, but not smooth-often making it hard to determine if he's staying on the subject. If you want one book to learn the most from, buy Keith Cameron's Sport Bike Performance Handbook (ISBN076030229). If you have money left over, buy this one. However, this book would be a great (okay...excellent) gift item for anyone that rides street or track performance motos. By the way, it equally covers Italian, Japanese and German designs.

If you like the technical part of motorcycling, you need this.

Very technical but in a easy, flowing way. You don't need to be an engineer to read, understand and enjoy it. And once you do, you'll understand so much more what your bike does and why. You'll also understand why you don't see balloon tyres and other bling accessories on racing bikes.

Great for learning the theory, but....

...don't take everything as gospel. This isn't to say Mr. Cocco doesn't know what he's talking about, as he obviously does - he just sometimes doesn't make things very clear when he's using English as opposed to Italian. Some of it is rough translation, while some of it is just shoddy editing. In particular, I think whoever edited it didn't do much math or engineering. Some of the equations themselves have typos (an explaination of an equation describes two different variables when only one exists in the equation... but twice), many of the variables aren't explained, and some equations just don't make sense (a force divided by a distance equals another force). And the chapter on aerodynamics needs to be reworked - there are a few times when downforce and lift are used interchangeably even though they're opposing each other, and since those are the key points in the chapter it makes the rest of it harder to follow.

That being said, if you just take this as basic theory and don't try to build any mathematical models or anything off it, it's an excellent source of info. Mr. Cocco is one of the best in the field and does a good job of getting fairly specific in a relatively short book. The illustrations are great in demonstrating ideas that are hard to visualize just based on his writing, and the equations, if not completely accurate/explained, give a good basic idea of how the stuff is looked at analytically. It's also nice to have a book dedicated just to describing the dynamics and forces involved. So if you're looking for anything regarding engine tuning, look elsewhere. The extent to which engines are involved here are their affects on weight transfer, CG height, etc...

If you're looking for the most difinitive and thorough explaination of the subject, get "Motorcycle Dynamics" by Vittore Cossalter. Mr. Cocco did cite Mr. Cossalter as his main scientific source, after all. But if you'd just like to get a general "so that's why that happens" idea of all the little things your bike does, this is the book for you.

Funny, frank take on anxiety

What makes this such a rare treat is that Dan is just a regular guy dealing with anxiety. As someone who has struggled with it myself, it's a really nice change of pace to see someone writing about fighting with it rather than dictating strategies for dealing with it from on high. Dan's funny, personable, and his journey to mental health is infinitely relatable. Mental illness has a nasty tendency to make sufferers feel like they're alone. Anxiety As An Ally is a frank, funny reminder that others have been there before.

I thought it might be a good read. This book isn't revolutionary

I'm a big fan of Game Informer and Giant Bomb. As someone that also struggles with anxiety and panic disorders, I thought it might be a good read. This book isn't revolutionary, by any means. He mentions exercise, yoga and meditation as various means for coping. He also gives a chronological order as to when he experienced his anxiety. This book just doesn't feel very personal or intimate, to me, which is what I was looking for. Dan is more of a technical writer than an emotional writer. Other audiences might enjoy this, but it didn't do anything for me.

If you think you're alone in dealing with anxiety-related issues, this book lets you know you are not. Plain and simple. Dan's book made me say "me too!" frequently and most importantly provided a sense of togetherness and comfort that is needed in the daily dealings with the little battles going on inside our heads, as well as a completely useful, easy, and practical way of confronting them.

Discharging the enigmatic Olaf, however, their path continues to overlap.What unfolds is a fascinating and intriguing exploration of alternative beliefs, and an encounter in which the pair have a lot to learn from each other. The book combines ancient wisdom, myths, holistic healing and gives practical guidance that can be used right away. Cowboy Bebop: Illustrations ~The Wind~

This is a high quality paperback book. It measures 9"(23cm) x 11 3/4"(30cm) x 1/2"(15mm) with 144 pages. I have rarely seen a paperback with a dust jacket before. It is printed on heavy glossy paper. Most pictures are color. The ones that aren't color never had any - pencil sketches and the like. It has sketches from when they were developing the characters (Originally Ed was a boy.) Most pages have comments from the artist with English translations. Most pictures are not just lifted from the show. There are many pictures I have never seen online. Two things I don't like are that sometimes the commentary is in the corners of the pictures and that some pictures span two pages. While these pictures look good that big, you have the spine of the book in the middle.

Of course, this book is only going to appeal to serious fans of the show, especially at this price. If you are such a fan you won't regret this purchase.

The Oxford Picture Dictionary Lesson Plans is an excellent teaching tool, especially for English Language Learners at all levels. It coordinates, page by page, with the Oxford Picture Dictionary - the best of its kind. 3 CD's included offer superb pronunciation audios and exercises. What a bargain for under $30!
with free S & H from Amazon.com. It was not out of stock and much more expensive thru Oxford University Press.
I suggest combining it with OPD/Low-Beginning Workbook (which includes audio & repro CD's)bundle. Around $26 - might only be available from Oxford Univ. Press. Makes for the BEST teaching resources for Adult Ed ESL teachers and educational institutions.

Excellent Companion Book

This book, conveniently spiral bound, serves as a companion book to Oxford Picture DIctionary and is meant to be used by a teacher as a lesson plan resource. I teach ESL and it is an integral part of my lesson plan. The book follows the subjects in OPD and is thus easily coordinatable with the OPD. I would rcommend it highly to anyone teaching ESL to adults.

I absolutely love this lesson plan book

I absolutely love this lesson plan book. Somebody who actually knows how to teach and does or did teach extensively wrote this book. It is fantastic! You can literally read it and teach directly from this book, the lesson plans are so well done. And it follows task-based communicative lesson style instruction (learning by doing/using the language), so it is also student-friendly. My students love it. I tweak the lessons and sometimes add to it, but you wouldn't have to.

An excellent summary of the state-of-the art of Python for Finance

This book could not be more timely. While Python has been the lingua franca for many data science centric disciplines, quantitative finance has only recently embraced the many benefits of this language and it's rich ecosystem of high quality scientific packages. The book manages to cater to all audiences and is suited for people with a background in finance who want to pick up Python, to Pythonistas who want to get started in Finance, as well as beginners in both disciplines.

What I particularly like about this book is its strong focus on applicability. The many code examples of analyzing real world data sets equips readers with the hands-on knowledge required to start analyzing financial data themselves.

Special note should also be made of how state-of-the art the concepts are the book illustrates. Not an easy feat for any book about a topic that moves at the speed of Python.

In sum, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started with, or sharpen her skills in Python for Finance.

This is an excellent book that works both as teaching medium as well as a reference. It targets finance people with some kind of programming experience (Matlab, R, VBA, etc) in a style that is easily accessible. The topics are well rounded and include chapters: on Data Structures; Performance Computing; on Excel integration, on Web, etc.

The book also shows that Python is well suited for typically demanding analytics tasks (simulation, HPC, hardware-bound IO). This is illustrated with real world use cases such as the DX Analytics case study which illustrates how efficient and powerful (the standard) Python (stack) can be.

In addition, this book shows how the latest "trends and fads" are being "followed" using Python (PCA, Bayesian MC, Web-based apps).

This book really helps the reader take the best of Python in (Quant) Finance -- no matter what kind of institution she/he/ai works for or what kind of academic research she/he/ai is involved in.

A mish-mash of text and code

The problem with this book is that it's not really a book in a normal sense. It's text inserted between sequential lines of Python code: three or four lines of code followed by one or two lines of text, ad infinitum. You read it but you don't feel like you've learned anything at all other than... I am not sure what.

Though (mostly) not authored by Willingham, this is very good.

If you're reading "Fairest" then you are already a Willingham fan. Fables (and even (most of) Jack of Fables belongs in your "you can read this book year after year." At first, I was wary of any "Fables" book that wasn't written by Willingham, as I was not a huge fan of the Cinderella spin-offs. However, I was very impressed with the Lauren Beukes story and the artwork. The story, with five issues, had enough time to delve into the Japanese canon of fairy tales, and in the same way that Willingham created a universe of Anglo fairy tales, Beukes touched upon the Japanese fable universe. This book is definitely not for little kids, with it's horror and sexual relations, but as an adult book, it was worked. I liked that the story (like Willingham's) was not totally linear and that for the first time we learned about Rapunzel and that the story used her "powers" in ways that weren't obvious.

I don't like spoilers in reviews, so this book, if you already are a Fables fan, is definitely worth reading, and likely re-reading. There is enough set-up for another Rapunzel story. And if you need to have your Willingham stories, there's a stand-alone Reynard the Fox story that, like Reynard, is delightfully clever.

I patiently wait for Vol. 3.

A Real Beginning for the Series!

I really enjoyed Volume 1 of Fairest when it was released; however, I never got the feeling while reading it that it was a series unto itself. It seemed more like a very long backup issue for the Fables series proper, and I was afraid that it would set a status quo for this new title, which would have been a shame because I was really looking forward to a spin-off that would explore the lives and stories of some of Fables' lesser-utilized characters. Luckily, Fairest Volume 2: Hidden Kingdom assuaged that fear.

This collection of issues #8-14 presents a very fun and captivating read, reminiscent of all the things that make Fables great, with enough differences to prove that Fairest can hold its own as a separate series. The characterization of Rapunzel, who has not received nearly enough exposure in the main series, is fantastic. She has a personality all her own, her back story and "powers" are explored in a unique and interesting way, and the relationship dynamic between her and Frau Totenkinder (whom I have greatly missed in recent Fables issues) is well worth the read.

The story is set back before the beginning of the Fables series and takes place mostly in Tokyo, so it is both temporally and physically displaced enough from its parent series to keep the story fresh and avoid too much reliance upon it. The inclusion of Japanese myths and folklore was really a welcome addition as well; it's nice to see some diversity creeping into this series, as that is something which is sometimes lacking in Fables. Again, that is the true gem here: Fairest really establishes itself in this volume as an opportunity to explore Fables-like stories without the baggage of the 120 or so issues worth of material Fables has accumulated.

The art for this volume, as with the last, is absolutely beautiful. It's very dynamic and has a more action-oriented vibe than the usual (yet still fantastic) storybook style art employed by Mark Buckingham in Fables. The pacing of the art and the layouts are engaging and eye-catching.

There are some issues, of course, most of which are my own personal qualms. The narration device that is used at times is a bit forced and cliche, and really doesn't add much to the narrative. It doesn't distract the reader too much, but it does slightly diminish the otherwise solid writing. Also, the ending of the story negates some of the gravitas of the preceding events and seems like it was shoe-horned in to allow it to mesh better with Fables continuity (which, as I'm sure you've guessed by now, is pet peeve of mine). These couple of problems really put the book somewhere closer to 3.5 stars for me personally, but if I'm being objective, I really do have to round that up.

The final issue, #14, is not part of the main storyline, which concludes in #13. It's a solid issue, written by series creator and Fables vunderkind Bill Willingham, involving Reynard the fox and the dryad Princess Alder. It's humorous and charming, and ends with a hint of things to come in the future of the Fables universe. This issue, predictably, does feel like a backup story for Fables, but as it is merely an interlude between Hidden Kingdom and the next major Fairest arc, I have no objections, especially since I have a particular soft-spot for Reynard.

Overall, an entertaining read and a great way to start this series off as a more independent entity than Volume 1 threatened. I like the idea of a new writer and artist coming on for each story arc and can't wait to see who the next team will be or which character they'll set their sights on.

Rapunzel & Japanese myths

There was a recent article (8/10/2013) by Mypeabody on the Observation Deck titled "Mark Millar & Todd McFarlane: Ladies, Comics Are Not For You." While I don't agree with some of what was written, the author argues the point that women read comics and that there are a few strong female characters (she partly blames the dearth of strong female leads on "chauvenistic" writers like Millar). For readers looking for strong female characters, Fairest is a title that delivers.

This volume is not as good as volume 1, but it is still solid. I'd give this 3.5 stars, but I rounded up because I'm a fan of the Fables line. Despite having Bill Willingham's name on the cover, he only consulted on the story. It was written by Lauren Beukes -- she does a decent job, but it is below Willingham's high standard.

The story takes places before the first issue of Fables, so Snow White is the Deputy Mayor, Bigby is the Sheriff and Frau Totenkinder is the leader of the 13th floor witches. Bigby and Totenkinder have supporting roles in this story, and they are true to their characters without stealing the scenes they are in.

The story centers on Rapunzel. She journeys to Tokyo to revisit friends & enemies (and frenemies) that she made in medieval Japan. It deals with themes of motherhood, daughterhood, friendship, unrequieted love and old lovers.

Awesome Read!!!

The reason for my rating is the material covers what was discussed in my classes. I like the way the manual has specific questions and gives an explanation as to why an answer was selected. It was easy to understand the questions as well as the answers. It helps to know "why" even if you know or don't understand the answer. Once an answer is explained it's much easier to retain the reasoning behind the question in my opinion. Understanding an answer is validation to the individual studying the material; although an individual does have the option of viewing answers after each practice test. I have several highlights of the test manual that were helpful. The user's guide to this course was organized; clarity of the questions was helpful, the outlined content of the manual was adequate and consistent, examples shown are useful and the content in the manual has made me feel more confident as I prepare for the NBCOT-COTA Exam.

Not as good as I expected!

Not as good as the first one.

LOS OJOS AMARILLOS DE LOS COCODRILOS.
I love it!

Second book of the trilogy
EL VALS LENTO LAS TORTUGAS
It was ok, not as good as the first one.

This one, third book,
I am still reading but, in spite of being better than the second one,
I am not really enjoying it.
It is too repetitive,
maybe for people who did not read the first and second books, it is ok.
but for me, continuosly reading thingsI already know, it is kind of boring!

Perhaps it will get better by the end, if so,
I will write another review.

Un lindo final del cuento que inicio con" Los ojos amarillos..." y "El Vals de las Tortugas...".
