About the Author
Barbara A. Brinson is an associate professor of Music Education at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where she directs the University Chorus, Women's Choir, and teaches choral conducting, choral methods, and foundations courses. Dr. Brinson served for 14 years on the music faculty of Southern Methodist University in Dallas and taught choral and general music in the Georgia public schools for 10 years at the elementary through high-school levels. She has directed choirs at all levels in both schools and churches. Brinson has served as director of the Intermediate Choir of the Chautauqua Children's Chorale; held the position of Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for Youth and Student Activities for New York American Choral Directors Association (NYACDA); and served on the editorial staff of the Journal of Research in Music Teacher Education. She has written articles for publications such as the Choral Journal, Music Educators Journal, and General Music Today. A frequent clinician at conventions, conferences, and schools, she also is very active as a guest conductor and as an adjudicator at choral festivals. Her professional affiliations include National Association for Music Education, ACDA, Sigma Alpha Iota, Pi Kappa Lambda and NYSSMA. Dr. Brinson received her Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the University of Tennessee, an M.Ed. in Music Education from Columbus State University, and a B.M. in Music Education from Wesleyan College.

This textbook offers complete and pertinent information for any student or teacher looking to develop a successful school choral program. I am not only impressed with Prof. Brinson's organizational skills, but also with her priorities as a teacher, director, and musician.

Expensive but worth every penny

This book is filled with quality hints and tips on how to organize a choral program at school! For the beginning teacher, it is an essential guide to help them understand what is needed to be a successful choral teacher and run a successful program at school, or as an extracurricular activity. Adversely, I find the book focuses on after-school choirs too much, but if this is what you need information on, you have a great book. The book has some very interesting suggestions on discipline within the choral group. There are also excellent musical suggestions and an excellent section on how to present choral pieces to a variety of group levels from beginner to advanced.

Nine months later Heather Rose is “bushed”—utterly disillusioned by the growing horror of her new-found realization that what her culture has to offer this community: the alcohol bootlegged in by the charming bush pilot; the unsuitable clothing sold by the thoughtless proprietor of the general store; the gasoline used as much by the youth of the community to get high as to afford them access to what has become the tractless wilderness they inhabit; she finally understands is less than nothing—total dependency. She returns, compelled, like Marlowe in Heart of Darkness to tell her story to others—like her missing supervisor, whose empty office she “occupies” on her return, illustrating her monologue of despair on a blackboard to an absent colonial authority for which the audience stands in as its silent and complicit witness.

Wendy Lill
Wendy Lill has not only written extensively for radio, magazines, film, television and the stage, but has also been active in national politics. In 1979, while with CBC Radio in Winnipeg, Lill wrote her first play, On the Line, to dramatize the plight of striking Winnipeg garment industry workers. Since then, her plays have gone on to examine the Canadian women’s suffrage movement (The Fighting Days); aboriginal-white relations (The Occupation of Heather Rose, Sisters); pedophilia and mass hysteria (All Fall Down); the slashing of social programs (Corker); and the dangerous lives of coal miners in her adopted province of Nova Scotia (The Glace Bay Miners’ Museum).

Another Great Book by the Master of Foldable Models

As usual John Montroll's books are always fantastic. My favorite thing about his books? Every model in his collections are
actually foldable with ordinary papers and by ordinary folders. No 3 weeks of pre-creasing, no need for expensive hand made papers.
His Models are very well presented and fairly easy to follow for any experienced origami folder. Yes there are many new technical folders with ultra realistic models that take weeks to fold or simply cannon be folded, but folding one of John Montroll's models
gives me the confidence to continue in this hobby.

design for self-published periodicals and books in the U.S. and Europe

With no outer spine covering, the book's signatures and the twine binding them together (for a solid binding) exposed at the spine and the linen front and back covers exemplify the improvisational nature of many self-published publications. The
more than 100 self-published works showcased are published regularly or periodically. The mostly illustrated interior with captions for the visual matter on nearly every page and occasional backgrounds on an editor or designer or short statements expand on this improvisational and in most cases energetic, adventurous, and artful style of the "zines" as such are called, short for "magazine". The large majority are European with a number from the United States.

Although there are cultural and political implications in the zines done outside of the corporate media selection, production, and promotion, the focus of the many and varied zines in this visual anthology is contemporary, mostly postmodern art involving photography, graphics, typography, and figures and faces.
Erik Van Der Weijde, publisher of "4878ZINE", is quoted, "To me, working with photography implies that I don't make things up. I just take what is already there, scoop it out of its context, and then present it after some selection and editing." Urs Lehni, publisher of Rollo Press, remarks, "Rollo Press is all about restrictions. The device itself is limited to a certain format, color, aesthetic, etc. I try to sound out the possibilities with these given limitations."

There are no basically literary, political, minority, feminist, or gender zines, kinds Americans are most familiar with. Although there are few of these found in America these days. Nonetheless, in the U.S., part of the image of zines involves their appearance in the cultural and political turmoil of the 1960s. This historical connection has been pushed into the background however as in the U.S. as in Europe, self-publications have changed with the growth of visual culture and concomitant aestheticized mentality and interests.

A tangible gift to those seeking to make peace with loss

Brave souls, enter here. Torn and ragged souls, enter here. Weary and desperate souls, enter here. Whether you are familiar with writing or haven't the faintest clue, Sheila Bender has designed a well-thought series of writing exercises to help you explore and make peace with your grief and loss. She provides writing models with complementary prompts and questions. Caution: there will be tears and laughter. However, through each writing assignment, I found that while I was making peace with my grief and giving it a place in my heart, I was allowing myself to see and feel the goodness of the past and the present moment. Sorrow's Words is a tangible gift to those who want to make sense of their world after the death of a loved one. For me, Sheila Bender provided the guidance I sought and could not find. My world (inner and outer) is a healthier and happier place because of her thoughtful guidance.

An invaluable and beautifully written guide on expressing personal loss

Sheila Bender's book on writing about sorrow is a map to the tender and hurting parts of our psyches after a terrible loss. Each chapter lets us immerse ourselves in that sorrow, one inch at a time. We go into the murky waters up to our ankles, then ours waists, then our chests as we slowly test the current of our grief. I felt as if the sister I lost to Leukemia was on the journey with me, looking over my shoulder to see what I had written, sometimes taking the pen in her own hand when I couldn't continue. Sheila poses the question: how can we possibly write after a terrible loss? Is it worthwhile? Isn't it selfish? Writing is, after all, a personal task, something we do for ourselves. But after going through these exercises I knew it was not selfish at all; it was necessary for my survival as a healthy, living person.
No matter how long ago you suffered your loss, this book will help you write about the person and about your relationship with him/her. The exercises open you to honestly expressing your emotions as you come to terms with the absence of your loved one. I felt, after finishing just two chapters, that I had uncovered memories about my sister and our lives together that otherwise I never would have remembered.
I highly recommend this book. It is beautifully written and an invaluable tool of healing.

Sheila Bender’s book, "Sorrow’s Words" has the right mix of heart and mind. It is honest in its emotion, yet instructional. She works with the reader to not only share an understanding of what it means to grieve, but then to show how to move forward and heal. Having looked to past poets herself for inspiration and following colleagues’ advice to publish, she illustrates how working together can be one of the best tools to continue to live deeply. She offers writing prompts throughout the book, meant to get the reader’s creative and cognitive wheels turning toward writing. Although this book is directed toward readers who have experienced the death of a loved one, I find the prompts very useful for writing to heal from other forms of loss, such as ruptured relationships and breakups, or even loss of one’s self.
