Great convenience
By Marc Cogan
An ominous paragraph on one of the publisher-added front pages of this facsimile edition warns that the book is being republished because of its cultural value despite the possibility that some pages may have reproduced badly, even to the point of illegibility. That must be a series-wide warning. Fortunately, there were no such problems with the text used for this title. Occasionally it may be hard to make out the breathings/accents combinations (or is that my aging eyes?), but basically the entries are perfectly legible.

It's a great convenience having a lexicon limited to only the vocabulary used in Herodotus' Histories. It saves a great amount of time compared to flapping through LSJ. The translations seem to make the effort to reflect the root meanings of the words as well as providing a more supple English synonym. I appreciate that.

I purchased the hard-bound edition, thinking it would be more durable. No doubt. But it's a little stiff, and, frankly, this lexicon will never see as much use as the general lexicon. So I think the paper-bound edition is probably the better value.

Transylvanian Moonrise, by Radu Cinamar, Peter Moon

In August of 2003, a mysterious and unprecedented collaboration of American and Romanian military troops conducted an expedition beneath the Romanian Sphinx in the Bucegi Mountains and uncovered the greatest archeological find of all time: a mysterious chamber some 50,000 years old with holographic technology that is beyond man’s wildest dreams.

Despite the political intrigue, turmoil and restriction around this great discovery, the leader of the expedition enabled Radu Cinamar to visit and explore these artifacts. Ever since, Radu’s life has been a labyrinthine adventure of strange events, clandestine liaisons and extraordinary people and circumstances.

Transylvanian Moonrise tells the story of Radu’s meeting with a Tibetan lama which is arranged by a mysterious alchemist whose ancestors have lived for hundreds of years by pursuing a secret tradition of the Great Work which prolongs life indefinitely until one can evolve beyond the physical plane. When Radu’s meeting takes place, the lama is accompanied by a yidam, a mysterious creature with supernatural powers that is created through a ritual using a Tibetan sand mandala. The lama reveals how he set the aforementioned events in motion in order to fix major imbalances in the Earth.

“Transylvanian Moonrise: A Secret Initiation in the Mysterious Land of the Gods” is not only a remarkable story, but it is an initiation of the highest order that will take you far beyond your ordinary imagination in order to describe events that have molded the past and will influence the future in the decades ahead.

More Mystery & Masonic Mahem from Mr. Moon in Moonrise...
By Penelope
More mystery, miracles and Masonic mayhem abounds in Transylvanian Moonrise, the sequel to Radu Cinamar's Transylvanian Sunrise published by Skybooks.

Whether one is in disbelief that these events can actually happen, one only has to ponder the recent proven archeological discoveries of numerous underground chambers and unusual pyramidal structures and healing underground lakes in the remote areas of Bosnia and Bulgaria of late.

If you suspend your belief for just a while, you will open your mind to a far more truer reality than what we have been offered in this day and age - perhaps our actual heritage as a species will be recovered & reclaimed if one explores further the truths offered in this tale.

The alchemical references are quite intriguing as well as an interesting embrace of new spiritual paths. If one could live many years thanks to an Elixir of Youth, think what advances one brilliant person could contribute to our human race?

The adventures are too numerous to recount here, but will leave you wanting to learn more about the adventures of Radu, Cezar and their quest for humanity's true lineage and spiritual heritage.

Although the story ends rather abruptly, it is still a very good read and great sequel to the first book. Can't wait to read the third book in the series! If you like to challenge what you've been taught to not believe, then these are the books for you.

Meet an unforgettable bibliophile

Elizabeth Brown doesn't like to play with dolls and she doesnt like to skate. What she does like to do is read books. Lots of books. The only problem is that her library has gotten so big she can't even use her front door anymore. What should Elizabeth Brown do? Start her own public library, of course! With charming verse and watercolors Sarah Stewart and David Small celebrate one of America's oldest and finest institutions.

From Publishers Weekly
The creators of The Money Tree paint a blithe yet affectionate portrait of a woman whose life centers on reading. Elizabeth Brown's obsession begins in childhood: "She didn't like to play with dolls,/ She didn't like to skate./ She learned to read quite early/ And at an incredible rate." Stewart's nimble verse follows the bibliophile through the years as she fills her home with books. Finally, "when volumes climbed the parlor walls/ And blocked the big front door,/ She had to face the awful fact/ She could not have one more." Elizabeth then decides to share her wealth: she donates her collection to the town, turns her home into a library and-of course-continues to read voraciously. Attuned to the story's humor and period setting, Small's (George Washington's Cows) airy illustrations charm with historical touches and soothing pastel hues. Triple-ruled black borders and filigreed corners suggest a family album of old, while black-and-white spot art highlights details of a singular life. The book's dedication adds a poignant note: "To the memory of the real Mary Elizabeth Brown, Librarian, Reader, Friend 1920-1992." All ages.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4?When Sarah Stewart's The Library was published (Farrar, 1995), librarians across the country looked at the endearing character of Elizabeth Brown and shouted "That's me!" Anyone who grows up with as intense a love of books as Elizabeth is bound to bond with libraries in one way or another. This sweet, simple story has now been issued in video and audio formats. The female narrator gives a warm, approachable reading to Stewart's gently humorous verse. The sprightly cello soundtrack suits the text perfectly. A few subtle sound effects enhance the story. In the video version, David Small's (Imogene's Antlers) softly shaded line drawings are panned to pick out the details which best describe the text. The whimsical, yet not altogether unrealistic story is a good choice for

From Booklist
Ages 5^-8. Although there is no author's note, this picture book is dedicated to the memory of the real librarian who inspired it. The story begins with young Elizabeth Brown, who doesn't like dolls or skates but instead prefers to spend her time reading. She reads through childhood and college, and as an adult, she spends her money on books, books, and more books. It's a little difficult to incorporate some of the concepts into the pithy, rhyming text. For instance: "The form was for donations. / She quickly wrote this line: `I, E. Brown, gives to the town / All that was ever mine.'" The next page shows a library with her name on the sign. Did she donate the books to a library, which was then named after her, or did she actually help build the building? It's a testament to Stewart and Small's collaboration that the book works as well as it does. The story of a spinster who does nothing but read isn't the most scintillating of topics, but Elizabeth's life takes on gentle humor as she is shown reading while standing on her head or trying to vacuum and read at the same time. Small's framed pastel artwork uses wonderfully unique perspectives, showing rooms with roaring fireplaces and books piled high to the ceiling. Reading has never looked quite so delicious. Is this you? Is this your house?
By Judy K. Polhemus
When I first saw the cover of "The Library," I had to have this book. My 87-year-old mother, still a voracious reader, tells stories of walking home from school, two miles each way, with a book in front of her face. Her sister and brothers had long left her behind, while she wended her way home, reading in progress. This picture makes me think of my mother and books.

What is it in those books to keep one pulled in, pinned in? At any rate, "The Library" is a paean to readers everywhere. Readers read. Elizabeth Brown is our stereotype, our archetype.

Each illustration shows another facet of the "stereotypical" reader. Early on, Elizabeth eschews toys for books, she reads uncover at night, she is bored by anything but reading. After completing school, she buys a house and becomes a tutor. Always reading.

Finally, she becomes so book-rich, there is no room left in her house. She donates it to the town along with the books for a Free Library. She moves in with a reading friend (who else?) to continue reading.

This is a lovely book, yes, but I have a problem with it. I'm a reader, a retired English teacher who pushed reading, a librarian who pushes a variety of books, yet I have a problem with Elizabeth Brown who reads her entire life. Yes, wow, the joy of reading and all it brings, but the joy of life outside a book and all it brings remains closed to Elizabeth Brown. The book saddens me a little, despite its beauty and nostalgia.

And, yes, my mother knows how to close a book and enjoy the life outside!

I would have given 5 stars if the typos had been corrected. Also, there are areas where French phrases are used without an explanation of the meaning. Overall, it is a good kindle translation.

Early musical life in Montreal
By Visa Guy
"Joseph Maffre: Master of the Band"

Reviewed by Gerry Maffre

For those interested in the musical life of mid-1800s Montreal, a new book has recently appeared filling a gap in the history of the city. Authors
and spouses, Marjorie Mikasen and Mark Griep, have written "Joseph Maffre: Master of the Band". Their book delves into Maffre's life with a
particular focus on his years in Montreal between 1838 and 1849 as a prominent musician and composer in Montreal.

Joseph and his parents fled their country of birth - France, for England where the young man first developed his musical talents before coming to
Canada as the Master of the Band of the 71st Regiment. This was early in the evolution of British military bands and masters from the Continent were much preferred to British-borne musicians.

Maffre arrived in a diverse city open to musical entertainment where musical and choral concerts were an important social activity and where the
citizenry was keen to take music lessons. This fledgling musical life was significantly nourished by military bands. The authors have found many examples of newspaper ads about forth-coming concerts in city churches and halls where the 71st Regiment's band, under Maffre's leadership, often played.

Upon leaving the army, Maffre continued as a band leader, but he also returned to composing, publishing and teaching music. With his French
roots, it's not surprising that his compositions - often quadrilles, reflected music and dancing styles from his homeland as well as being inspired by his Canadian experience. Both in his religious practices within the family and in his musical activities, he clearly moved between Montreal's Catholic and Protestant and English and French communities in providing entertainment for the citizens.

Maffre and his English-born wife, Lucy, had ten children - some of whom followed their Father into a musical life in Montreal and environs. Joseph
and Lucy passed away within days of one another during the Montreal cholera epidemic of 1849.

Mikasen - a distant relation to Maffre, and Griep devoted spare time and holidays over twenty-five years to researching this book - and this
commitment and diligence show. They have delved into marriage, baptismal and death records in Corsica, Britain and Canada, read through newspapers published during Maffre's years in various cities and searched trans-Atlantic archives for copies of Maffre's music, pictures and maps of places where he lived, and details about his military service and the musicians with whom he played.

It's a significant work of history which a British expert on the minimally explored field of the history of British military bands has described as
"one of the most important contributions" to this field. For this reviewer - another distant relative of Joseph and Lucy, it was a fascinating and
revealing read about their lives.

Mikasen is an artist and Griep is a professor of chemistry at the University of Nebraska. Gerry Maffre is a Montrealer by birth.

Amazon.com Review
There is little sugar but lots of spice in journalist Rachel Simmons's brave and brilliant book that skewers the stereotype of girls as the kinder, gentler gender. Odd Girl Out begins with the premise that girls are socialized to be sweet with a double bind: they must value friendships; but they must not express the anger that might destroy them. Lacking cultural permission to acknowledge conflict, girls develop what Simmons calls "a hidden culture of silent and indirect aggression."

The author, who visited 30 schools and talked to 300 girls, catalogues chilling and heartbreaking acts of aggression, including the silent treatment, note-passing, glaring, gossiping, ganging up, fashion police, and being nice in private/mean in public. She decodes the vocabulary of these sneak attacks, explaining, for example, three ways to parse the meaning of "I'm fat."

Simmons is a gifted writer who is skilled at describing destructive patterns and prescribing clear-cut strategies for parents, teachers, and girls to resist them. "The heart of resistance is truth telling," advises Simmons. She guides readers to nurture emotional honesty in girls and to discover a language for public discussions of bullying. She offers innovative ideas for changing the dynamics of the classroom, sample dialogues for talking to daughters, and exercises for girls and their friends to explore and resolve messy feelings and conflicts head-on.

One intriguing chapter contrasts truth telling in white middle class, African-American, Latino, and working-class communities. Odd Girl Out is that rare book with the power to touch individual lives and transform the culture that constrains girls--and boys--from speaking the truth. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly
Although more than 16 years have passed, Rhodes Scholar Simmons hasn't forgotten how she felt when Abby told the other girls in third grade not to play with her, nor has she stopped thinking about her own role in giving Noa the silent treatment. Simmons examines how such "alternative aggression" where girls use their relationship with the victim as a weapon flourishes and its harmful effects. Through interviews with more than 300 girls in 10 schools (in two urban areas and a small town), as well as 50 women who experienced alternative aggression when they were young, Simmons offers a detailed portrait of girls' bullying. Citing the work of Carol Gilligan and Lyn Mikel Brown, she shows the toll that alternative aggression can take on girls' self-esteem. For Simmons, the restraints that society imposes to prevent girls from venting feelings of competition, jealousy and anger is largely to blame for this type of bullying. It forces girls to turn their lives into "a perverse game of Twister," where their only outlets for expressing negative feelings are covert looks, turned backs and whispers. Since the events at Columbine, some schools have taken steps to curb relational aggression. For those that haven't, Simmons makes an impassioned plea that no form of bullying be permitted.

From Booklist
Forget the stereotypes of sugar and spice. Girls are mean, and as this books and a recent New York Times Magazine cover storyindicate, their subtle, insidious style of bullying is rapidlygarnering attention and concern. Simmons, a twentysomething with apolitical background, calls on her extensive face-to-face researchwith teens in this book that exposes the social minefields of femaleadolescence and the deep scarring that can result. Bolstered withnumerous revealing anecdotes and quotes, Odd Girl Out does anexcellent job of articulating to adults exactly the pain and subtlewarfare that many teen girls experience, and Simmons offers thoughtfulmotivations for both bullies and the parents who are reluctant to reinthem in. She also offers admirable, groundbreaking insight into anall-too-common issue and will be invaluable to any adult struggling tohelp a girl get through her teens. Informative and enlightening
By Shelleyrae
I read the first edition of Odd Girl Out about five years ago when my oldest daughter was in grade 4/5 and there were some real problems regarding bullying and power struggles amongst the girls in her year. While my daughter was not a direct target, nor a bully, it was a stressful time for her as two girls in particular aggressively manipulated the social hierarchy, girls switched alliances almost daily and the school seemed at a complete loss at how to deal with it. To help my daughter cope with the upheaval I read a number of books on the subject including Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls and Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence, both of which I also would recommend to parents and educators of girls.
I chose to read this revised edition because my oldest daughter is now fifteen and as an avid (ie constant) user of Facebook, MSN and various online social communities. Additionally my youngest daughter is now eight and an awareness of online social communities is beginning to creep into her consciousness. As such I was particularly interested in Simmons inclusion of the dynamics of cyber-bullying and how I might be able to help my daughters navigate this social arena.
The strength of Odd Girl Out is that it illustrates the experience of female bullying in a personal manner, with girls sharing their circumstances in their own words. I, like most women, recognised many of the methods girls use to control their social world. With hindsight, the daily drama of school seem mostly petty and irrelevant but I do still remember the intensity of the emotion that surrounded playground machinations - the agony of being dumped by a best friend, the desire to be popular, and like most I have been both a victim and perpetrator (though largely an unwitting one)of the type of bullying and aggression Simmons examines. Odd Girl Out is a reminder of the seriousness with which girls interact with their peers.
The new chapter that addresses cyber bullying/drama is interesting and I think is full of useful information, especially for parents who are not familiar with technology. I am a net-savvy parent who uses social media and have discussed the issues with my daughter but I know she doesn't see the consequences of a casual status update or online flirting the same way as I do, which is highlighted by the stories shared in this chapter. Later on in the book, Simmons discusses strategies for managing media in the lives of girls in practical ways, this chapter is particularly useful and as I am trying to walk the line between keeping an eye on my teenager's online activities without invading her social privacy too much, I found it informative and encouraging.
The focus of Odd Girl Out tends to be on girls aged 11-13 and in particular those whose experiences are at the extremes of the issue but nevertheless I think it has relevance for those involved in any setting where girls aged 8 to 16 interact. Simmons grounds the research, giving the experiences of young girls, and the lasting effects, credibility and for a parent (or educator) I think it can provide a vocabulary for discussion and investigation.

found it wanting
By J. Heller
I decided to read this book because I thought it might help me deal with the issues my daughter is starting to face in elementary school. I saw myself in this book -I distinctly recall when my "best friend" in 4th grade cornered me in the girls bathroom and told me I better stop being a brat otherwise she wouldn't be my friend anymore. I was lost and bewildered, like many of the victims in this book, and I couldn't figure out what I did to earn her wrath. Years later I know I did nothing but the pain from that moment is still there and the pain inflicted through middle and high school by various girls is not far from the surface. Reading this book made me realize why I have trouble making friends and why I just don't "put myself out there". I've been shot down way too many times.

BUT while this book did shed some light on what happened to me and put into words what girls do to each other I didn't find what I was hoping for; some type of blueprint, some sort of plan for me to help my daughter through this. The author kept saying that we needed to come up with a new language to explain girl bullying but she never came up it. Nor did I find anything to help explain things to my daughter. She did end the book with some words of advice on how to talk to your daughter about what may be happening to her but all this book did was take her countless interviews with girls and women and prove that girls just aren't that nice.

A very important book
By Elizabeth Chivers
This book resonated with me on so many levels: as a girl who dealt with alternate aggressions, as a teacher of young girls, a a stepmother of an adolescent, and as an aunt. Although at times redundant and lengthy in its retelling of countless interviews, this book is a great read for anyone who has a young girl in their life.
