About the Author
After working for many years as a criminal appeals attorney in New York, Tonya Plank now lives and writes in Southern California. A former amateur ballroom dancer, she wrote the dance blog, Swan Lake Samba Girl. Her first novel, Swallow, won several awards, including gold medals in the Independent Publisher and the Living Now Book Awards, and was a finalist in ForeWord's Book of the Year and the National Indie Excellence Awards. When not writing, she enjoys taking road trips with her rescue dog, Sofia, devouring Mexican food and Cadillac margaritas, sweating to dance-based workouts, cuddling up with her cats and a good book, and seeing dance performances of any kind. I got the FEVER!!!

Impressive. Very impressive! This was my first Tonya Plank novel and I was really blown away at this author's ability to bring so much to life!! Truth? I despise cliffhangers. But every once in a while, a series comes along with all the right ingredients. Just the right mixture to reel me in. And, my book friends, this is one of them!!

"I first saw him at The Beverly Hilton. Witness him, is more like it."

I'm a huge fan of dance - all dance! I love doing it, while no one's watching. I love watching it - from the raw and gritty rehearsals, to the magical perfection of show night! Dance makes people feel! I've read many dance-centered romances. In all honesty, I've loved them all. But this author was able to pull in every detail of watching, of studio work, of competition night. Making it fell like I'm there. Living it, breathing it. It was stunning!

Rory faces many... hardships in this book. At first I saw her as a timid, mousey type. But I soon realized, she just unhappy. Her boss makes her job stressful, practically thrusting her into the bear den with no survival gear. Her boyfriend is an absolute coward - you'll read why! And although she thinks she's long since beaten an illness, it begins slowly to rear it's nasty head. But when Rory sees Sasha dancing for the first time, small thoughts of her passion for dance come trickling back in. It was as I was watching a flower in need of watering come back to life. It was stunning.

"But, I loved dance. I loved dance... I wanted to dance again for myself."

There are few words from Sasha in this book. Most during Rory's private lessons and most correcting her form. Much of Sasha comes from Rory's thoughts and friends of/about him. She's completely mesmerized from the first meeting. The way he moves, and how he moves make her feel. And to put it out like that somehow seems trite, because he is definitely a main character! He floods her thoughts. She can always 'feel' him near. He even stars in most of the studio gossip. Sasha seemed quiet, almost brooding at times. He appeared, almost, unapproachable at times. But as the story progressed, he became more. I felt the real greatness in Sasha's character was unspoken.

"I couldn't get his gaze out if my mind, the way he'd searched my face. What on earth was he looking for?"

I'll never think of Peggy Lee's "Fever" without thinking of this book!! I really enjoyed this book and actually had a book planned in between book #1 and #2, but I'm jumping right in!! I have to know what happens next!!

Great read!

I don't read romance fiction and I've never paid much attention to ballroom dancing -- but I just loved this book! It's wonderfully written, the main character Rory is so likable, and the hero Sasha so compelling, I was drawn immediately into the story. But one of the most interesting things about this book is that you will also fall in love with dance.

It's the first in a series, and I started the next one as soon as I finished this.

On Karl Gnass and His Newest Book

There are two teachers I blame most for me dropping out of art college, Karl Gnass is one of them. I have never had a more fearless, intelligent, experienced, professional, positive, slightly sarcastic, gentle, encouraging and kind master teaching me about art and life. He along with a few others, are what I have been subconsciously searching for since I be can my own artistic journey. I have never spent so little to receive so much solid tools and guidance from a teacher. I know if I took classes with Karl for thirty years, bought all of his books or watched all of his you-tubes there would always be more to learn from him. Karl knows what to say to you when you need to hear it. More than that he knows how to get you to ask yourself the right questions for where you are in your own journey. He is fearless in his work and is fearless in helping you learn how to help yourself. Like all the best things in life there is always something new to see and learn in his work and in his words. I could not be more thankful to be learning with Karl, I hope to remain a nuisance to him for the rest of his teaching life.

Review on Spirit & Force
This is not a how to draw book written by a how to draw teacher. This is an insight into a true masters mind and his process. This is a beautiful piece of art you should use, abuse and leave on your coffee table for everyone to do the same. On its surface it is a really beautiful put together "sketchbook" to look at. Its paperback, its a good weight, it is so precious but you don't feel like you need to hold it like a baby, it's a book you can use. Inside there is one five page technical lesson, some nature sketches, and a plethora of wonderful sayings and small lessons. The bulk of the book is the hundreds of figure drawings with different sensitivities, mediums, and explorations of seeing and developing process. In his book and in his classes he often brings up how important it is to ask yourself the right question for yourself right now. "What is your question". When I really sit down and do this, and look through this book I always see my answers and I always leave with more questions and energy to go solve them. I couldn't recommend this book or this man more. Now please add his book to your shopping cart. Your eyeballs, mind and spirit will thank you.

The book I've been waiting for!!

I 'm so happy to have finally gotten this book. It was well worth the wait! The placement of figures on each page take you on a journey and you have to keep moving. One after another, they draw you in to the next. (pun intended. sorry.) If the first book emphasized the intent and spirit of drawing, this book accents the process. Each figure is drawn with incredibly masterful skill but rather than having "perfectly pretty" line work, they are all extremely loose. Sometimes it almost fools you into thinking that drawing is easy. Minimal text inspires the reader and/or aspiring artist not to hold onto the comfort of a known method. Don't settle and keep digging even if it can get messy. It sounds easier than it is and this book will now serve as my own personal reminder. In addition to the figures, I was very fond of the sketches of cats, landscapes, and deer. There's only a few and I wish there were more! The short study of active anatomy at the end of the book was also very informative. I hope there will be more comprehensive guides in the near future. Til then, I'll spend my time looking through this gorgeous book!

I first met Karl, about 10 years ago, when I took his life drawing classes at the Walt Disney Animation Studio. What struck me most about Karl was his gift for capturing the essence of the story of the figure with great economy, clarity, and energy. His art hints at the sketch work of Michelangelo, Rapheal, and Tintoretto.

As a student of life drawing, "Spirit and Force in Figure Drawing" is a must have - each of the many drawings is worthy of analysis for gesture, tone, and form. A definite feast for the eyes and soul.
