Dr Dheeraj Sharma is a faculty in Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India. Dr Sharma has been the recipient of many academic and professional awards. He is an American Marketing Association Doctoral Consortium Fellow and National Conference�of Sales Management Doctoral Fellow. He was nominated for Clifford J. Robson Excellence in Teaching Award, and also for Erica and Arnold Rogers Excellence in Research�Award for year 2009 2010. He was an associate editor of Journal of Marketing Channels, and also an editor of the Academy of Marketing Science proceedings. He is an�active member of Academy of Marketing Science, Society of Marketing Advances, American Marketing Association, and World Marketing Congress. As a member of the�aforementioned associations, he has served as a session chair, discussant, track chair, and executive member of organization committee.

Traitor or Patriot?

"The Man Without a Country," written by Edward Everett Hale in 1863, tells the story of Philip Nolan, a young lieutenant in the United States Navy, who, at his court martial for treason, damned the United States and cavalierly wished that he might never hear her name again. Nolan's sentence was to have his wish fulfilled. For fifty-five years he was kept at sea, being repeatedly transferred from ships that approached land to those that were headed out to sea. Although Nolan was not treated like a prisoner, a unique protocol was developed that kept him from hearing or seeing any news from home.
Because of obscure references (especially early in the story) and some archaic wording, reading the story aloud is recommended. This provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that much can be gleaned from a story even when references are not completely understood. Pausing periodically to summarize the main points can help to keep students involved until you get to Hale's anecdotes that will truly captivate them.
In addition to delineating the consequences of an impetuous act, "The Man Without a Country" provides a thought-provoking portrait of a patriot. In essays or debates students might consider Was Nolan's sentence fair? Should he have been pardoned?

Heartwarming & Heartbreaking!

I can't believe the reader from Allentown didn't care for this book. I first read this story in high school and remember how choked up I got over Phillip's absolute and total love for a country he hasn't been able to see or hear about for over half his life due to his impassioned, yet stupid youthful declaration that he "never wanted to hear his country's name again!".
I hope other would-be readers listen to the other reviews and try this book. You WILL NOT be disappointed. You will be fighting back tears by the end of this story. As I said, I read this book while in my teens and still enjoy re-reading it. You will cherish what you have after you finish.

A multi-level classic: Unlooked for consequences of anger

When Philip Nolan spewed out the words, "Damn the United States! May I never hear her name again!", the (c 1812) tribunal decided that that indeed would be his punishment for his involvement with Aaron Burr: Never to see or hear of his birth land again. The poignancy of this consequence through his long years of exile/imprisonment on U.S. ships crescendoes to the denoument, when the evidence of Nolan's encounter with what he had lost is described. Beautifully written. No flag-waving overt patriotism here. Subtle. Inferential. Puts one in touch with what we take so much for granted in the U.S. of A.!

Terrific, unique work

I have really come to love this book over time. First off, the author clearly explains the basic workings of all corrosion mechanisms in detail with illustrative diagrams. I have read the classic Fontana books, Schweiter's works, and hundreds of articles on corrosion of metals, polymers, coatings etc but this book takes it to another level. I have achieved an enhanced understanding of all forms of corrosion including discovery of many finicky details heretofore unbeknownst to me. For example, regarding galvanic corrosion of zinc and iron, "at temperatures above 60 C (140F), the zinc becomes cathodic and the iron becomes anodic (p. 124)." In the rusting of iron, "if Fe(Oh)2 [ferrous hydroxide] is formed on the surface of a metal very rapidly, the corrosion is prevented (a passive film)", but "the corrosion rate is very high if the ferrous iron is oxidized to ferric oxide rapidly (p. 123)." Did you know that replacing a new pipe next to the old pipe makes the new pipe anodic, meaning the new pipe will corrode (p. 131)? Also, regarding galvanic corrosion, "titanium has a tendency to polarize cathodically in seawater. Any less resistant metal attached to titanium will not undergo corrosion as would be expected because of the cathodic polarization of titanium."

In the "Types of Corrosion" chapter, the author goes into great detail to explain each mechanism in detail. On "factors affecting crevice corrosion", the author provides the following detailed list (p.140):

Have you ever seen such a thorough breakdown of crevice corrosion factors?? This is great, and it is typical of Mr. Ahmad's comprehensive approach throughout the book. Check out p.153 in the preview for an unparalled view of the anatomy of a pit. He then closes the section with an 11-point checklist for the prevention of pitting corrosion (p.162). After 150 pages of detailed insights, diagrams, and examples, this in-depth chapter finally comes to a close.

In the "Corrosion Prevention by Design" chapter, illustrations are abound on every page. If you can preview the chapter, you'll see that the author was truly intent on making his readers understand these concepts fully.

In addition, this is a great all-in-one quantitative book expecially as regard corrosion kinetics. Mr. Ahmad explains the derivations clearly and I was left with an understanding of the equations, how to use them, and the assumptions under which they are valid.

A whole chapter on atmospheric corrosion is provided, illuminating the fact that "If the atmosphere is clear and uncontaminated, corrosion is negligible at a RH as high as 99%. However, in the presence of contaminants, corrosion begins to increase around 80% RH...steel can corrode even at 35% RH in the marine environment. At a RH of 55%, a surface film of 15 molecules thick is formed on mild steel, which increases to a 90 molecular layer as the RH increases to 100%, causing an acceleration of the corrosion process (p.554)."

It goes on and on. On top of that, this jewel is available at a really reasonable price. With a publication date of 2006, this is gotta be my best pick for a corrosion textbook for the serious professional. For a design engineer/failure analyst such as myself, this great work is a dream come true. Thank you sincerely, Mr. Ahmad.

GOWAN & SAXON vs. CASTLE & BECKETT

I'm a huge fan of the tongue-in-check humor employed by the TV series, Castle, where a writer tags along & helps a New York city detective solve crimes. What makes it even better is that the writer(s) of Castle have decided to make Richard Castle "real" - with his books being published, series being made into graphic novels and even a website. Imagine the fun I've had with the opportunity to read (in exchange for an HONEST review) the recently published novel, "TRACE ELEMENTS" by Kate Donovan! I think I enjoyed it so much because it has vague similarities to Castle with its expanded media...

"TRACE ELEMENTS" is a 191 page romantic suspense novel penned by Kate Donovan, but tag-lined as if it were an actual television show. Josh Saxon is an FBI agent who recently found & rescued a kidnapped four year old and is still trying to solve the "whodunnit" of the kidnapping. To help the young child feel safer, the parents request that the FBI approach the actress of their favorite FBI TV show, Nikki Gower, who portrays Agent Annika Trace, will come reassure the girl she is not in any more danger. (See where it's going here? An actress in a TV show, portraying an FBI agent, needs to come "be" an FBI agent, etc....)

While at times the premise seems a bit far-fetched, well, that's why it is fiction. It's funny to see the dialogue between the real agent & the "real" agent... and interesting to watch them fall for each other. Again - while it seems a bit far-fetched... IT'S FICTION. The mystery in the story is entertaining and not too transparent that it can't keep a reader involved, and it's funny how Nikki thinks about everything in terms of what her character would do or how the show would go. Most interesting, though, is that at the end Kate Donovan has written the "TV Pilot" for the original "Trace Elements" show. Now, I have to admit - at that point, I was starting to feel a bit dizzy, with the show within the book about the story surrounding the show... whew! Get what I mean? And really - this roundabout poking fun at itself is what makes this such an enjoyable book!

At $2.99 this is a great value - and since it looks as if Kate Donovan has quite a backlist of novels, you may just find another author to add to your TBR (to-be-read) pile!

Not what I expected, but better.

I didn't know what to think when I first got this book, maybe it was a Castle type story minus Nathan Fillion, I was wrong. This was a great book lovable characters and not a sugar coated storyline.

Special Agent Josh Saxon has hit a dead end after the successful return of four year old kidnapped victim Linzie. She has remained silent about her kidnappers due to the trauma she had to endure, she has only one wish to speak to her favorite T.V. character, Special Agent Annika Trace. The FBI bring in actress Nikki Gower to help. Josh is not happy when he first hears that they are bringing in an actress to help but soon changes his tune when Nikki bonds with the child bringing her a little further out of her shell everyday she is with her enough she is able to help give clues and identify suspects.

The chemistry between Josh and Nikki is electric. Unable to keep it professional they soon end up in bed together, but between the case and the baggage from his past and her current issues they always end up arguing after sex and making up a few hours later. I really do like this book, but I am a fan of FBI stories so it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked reading it. I want more I hope to read more books from the series, my hope for the series is that it doesn't get to soap opera-ish.

I had received another one of Kate Donovan's books for review (Play by Play and it was also good and creative) and it included the first chapter of this book. I found myself intrigued by the creative story line and immediately purchased and read it (totally ignoring the 1000+ books already in my TBR pile.) This book and this author have definitely been a pleasant surprise.

Like I said, the story line is incredibly creative. Josh is an FBI agent and he's in the middle of a case that's getting worse and worse. He saved a 4 yo little girl from a kidnapping, but they didn't catch the kidnappers. He needs her to give him information, but she's completely clammed up and won't tell him a thing. She's terrified and as the hours and days go by the chances of catching the kidnappers become even slimmer.

In an act of desperation, they bring in actress, Nikki Gower, who plays an FBI agent on the 4 yo's favorite TV show. They hope the little girl will trust her enough to talk to her. Nikki isn't your typical actress. She fell into her career on the way to actually working for the FBI. The creator of her TV show has used her life as inspiration for the show. But Josh is less than thrilled to have her there meddling, until it starts to work and he begins to realize that she does have a natural talent for this.

This book is just the start of the series and although the book ends well, there's a few loose ends out there that you can see are definitely going to come up in future books. I can't wait!

It's a great set-up for a book and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more. There were a few rough spots in the book (especially in the first half) where the character actions gave me a bit of whiplash in their too rushed changes of heart and actions. But overall, the book was good enough that I could overlook that. Kate Donovan has a great writing voice and I foresee it getting better and smoother as she goes on. Her stories are very creative. The two I've read have been great just in the completely new twists that she includes in her stories. Overall, her books are easy to read and her characters are absolutely fabulous. I definitely look forward to reading more!

Comprehensive and Great Illustrations

This book is a great resource for students and newcomers to sustainable design. It's comprehensive in that it covers all aspects of sustainable design including more sophisticated topics like life cycle analysis. It is clearly well edited (and written) since it covers the most significant. It's a great overview. The images are fabulous and help to create a book that is a rich resource of information. Highly recommend!

Brilliant Compendium

Marian Keeler is an academic idealist with an encyclopedic mind. All subjects in both domestic and commercial green building are covered in this wonderfully illustrated tome. There must be a hundred photos, with historical or contemporary relevance to the many and varied subjects she details in a clear, pristine prose.

Had to read this for a class as a textbook. While it is made to be a textbook many common features such as key terms being in bold or italicized were not done the glossary was not done thoroughly enough with all key terms. Has some good information but is not good enough for a textbook.

An amazing learning tool for Oracle 12c

To put it quite simply, this book is fantastic. Each chapter is rich with content and offers numerous amounts of coding examples that help paint a vivid picture of how you would impliment the code in your own day to day experiences with 12c. What really won me over with this book wasn't the fine detail within the chapters, but what was outside the chapters. More than HALF of this book is made up of Appendices that go into an amazing amount of detail for the code examples in each of the chapters. This is particularly useful in two different ways.

The first being that it helps each chapter become much easier to follow and understand, and that the chapter doesn't become bogged down by creating too much attention on one example. Instead, each chapter discusses a concept with detail, and then refers you to the Appendix for further in depth detail. For me personally, this really made it easier for me to read through each chapter and create an understanding on all the material, and then I could reference the Appendix for further detail if needed.

The second being that if you struggle with a concept or want to learn more about a particular subject within any of the chapters, you can reference the Appendix and have more than enough material to become extremely knowledgable on the subject matter. One particular thing I really enjoyed from personal experience, Is I had referenced the Appendix for "Security Hardening". I was suprised to find an amazing amount of information, one bit of information in particular teaches you how to use a packet sniffer tool, called wireshark, to detect and find user login credentials as well as how to protect yourself from those who are trying to use this method to gain access to your own credentials!

This book was much easier to read than Michael McLaughlins previous "Oracle Database 11g & MySQL 5.6 Developer Handbook". While still an amazing book to introduce MySQL and Oracle databases to a SQL newcomer, it was not as easy a read due to jumping between multiple databases and it felt the chapters had a few too many examples. None of which is an issue in this book in any way, shape, or form.

I really enjoyed this book, and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for an in depth and hands on experience with Oracle 12c

Crisp, clean, concise and highly-organized.

This will be the third book I have read out of several of Michael's books on Oracle.

I get the same feeling from reviewing this book that I get when writing a procedure or package to fill a Technical Requirement and, after spending some time on it, the procedure or package all comes together as neat, clean, efficient and complete.

The striking thing about this book, for me, is its precise focus on subject matter. By that I mean that if a section is entitled, "Lexical Units", that's exactly what it's about, with no superfluous information or digressions found there. I, personally and in various technical documents I have written for work, have found that this precise focus is an easy thing to conceive of and aspire to, and a difficult thing to accomplish in a project of any scale. The difficulty comes in trying to strike that balance between being thorough and being focused and concise.

The way Michael accomplished this in this book is by "back-loading" the book with massive and great appendixes on the following subjects: 1) Oracle Database Primer, 2) SQL Primer, 3) SQL Built-in Functions, 4) PL/SQL Built-in Packages and Types, 5) Regular Expression Primer, 6) Wrapping PL/SQL Code Primer, 7) PL/SQL Hierarchical Profiler Primer and 8) PL/SQL Reserved Words and Keywords.

Putting all of this deep technical knowledge at your fingertips, without having to cloud a given chapter or section with it, when the chapter or section describes a more specific but related topic, gives this book its crisp and clean quality of reading or reference.

This book is worth the purchase price for either the "SQL Primer" appendix (almost 200 pages) or the "PL/SQL Built-in Packages and Types" appendix alone. Obviously, all of the appendixes are valuable depending upon your needs at any given point in time, but in my career, my intense focus on PL/SQL combined with the inherent differences in concept and syntax paradigms between PL/SQL and SQL, have caused me to overlook a lot of the inherent power available in SQL, and my intense focus on "build, build, build", I think, has caused me to overlook much of the out-of-the-box power available in the Built-in Packages and Types.

In particular, the SQL appendix is particularly thorough, crisp and clear covering many sub-subject areas, among which the following are found: 1) History of SQL, 2) SQL Data Types, 3) DDL, DML, Transaction Management, 4) ACID compliance and how the Oracle database achieves it, 5) Managing Nested Tables and VArrays, 6) Advanced DML such as multiple-table Insert statements, Updates and Deletes using correlated subqueries and the Merge statement, 7) Managing large objects (Clob, Blob, etc.), 8) Overloading, 9) Object Types.

Regardless of your place on the Oracle SQL or PL/SQL expertise scale, I am confident you will find this book an invaluable reference to help you accomplish your programming goals due to its crisp, clean, organized and thorough coverage of the Oracle PL/SQL subject matter, along with other related information contained in its voluminous appendixes.

Oracle Database 12c PL/SQL Programming has met all of my expectations and more. There are plenty of great examples throughout the book that spark imagination and creativity. When you're wondering how something you've just read about works, you don't need to look vary hard to find an example to go with it. At the end of the chapters there are great questions to quiz yourself on as well. I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy this book.

This book allowed me to finish Steelhead faster than I ever would have dreamed!

I think the most useful reviews are ones in which the product in question was actually tested. This is why I waited until after my half ironman before writing this review. I did Steelhead 70.3 less than a week ago and I’m happy to report that, using only this book (and never having done a half iron before), I utterly destroyed even my most optimistic goals! I’m still on cloud 9 just thinking about it! For a little background, I’m a middle of the pack age-grouper and have done about 4 olympics and 12 or so sprints so, as you can see, I’m no Dave Scott. My Oly PR is 2:57 and I trained hard for that using a personalized online program. So, let’s cut to the chase. Here are the pros and cons of this awesome book:
Pros:
1) It has everything you need in one short and simple book. Besides the training programs (3 of them), there are sections on heart rate training, specific swim workouts, strength training, stretching, core work, transitions, nutrition, race day fueling/hydration, equipment, technique, mental aspects, recovery, injury prevention, missed workout adjustment, adjusting the programs for tune up races, etc. Like I said, it has everything. And it’s all very clearly explained.
2) It’s time-based instead of miles-based. This makes time management for busy people like us much easier. Of course, If you’re slow, you may not achieve the distances you should be so some adjustment may be required (for example, starting the program early to build you fitness). This is what I did which I’ll explain later.
3) It’s designed with a great degree of flexibility built right in. I used the “intermediate” program which includes 2 rest/slide days. These “slide” days and where they occur are the key. Every Friday and Monday are rest/slide days. To quote the book: “…use them to slide your rest days forward or back one day to better fit your training schedule...”. At first, I thought 2 days of rest/slide was one too many and thought I would use the Monday rest/slide session for an extra swim workout. It turns out that the slide days were crucial in maintaining consistency. I missed very few workouts because I could do it on a slide day when life got in the way (which it always does).
4) It is heart rate based. Be careful with this one. Initially, I used a formula which underestimated my max heart rate by a wide margin. This made for some painfully slow workouts. Only when I actually measured my max HR using one of the protocols described in the book (I did the 5k run protocol) did my workouts become appropriately challenging. Don’t worry, they explain everything you need to know about the zones and all that.
5) Brick sessions. I thought the bike-run bricks proved to be useful come race day. I was used to the feeling of running right off the bike. Not everyone agrees with the utility of brick sessions but I thought they helped. Some are very long, though. For example, the intermediate program calls for a 4 hour 15 min bike workout followed immediately by a 45 min run. I usually cut the run short (but don’t tell the Finks!!).
6) Intervals, hill repeats, and other hard sessions. While not super fun, I feel that these really helped increase my speed and strength. Don’t skip them.
7) There are 3 full training programs to choose from. These are the “just finish”, the intermediate, and the competitive programs. I chose the intermediate program because I wanted to more than “just finish” and the competitive program looked like a bit much. It turns out that the intermediate program was pretty time consuming and intense in my opinion (but you ARE training for a half ironman after all!) However, I would choose it again. It’s also laid out in a very easy to understand format (unlike other some other programs that have multiple codes for workouts written in a complex spreadsheet-like format).
8) There are only 2 swim sessions per week in the intermediate program. This could be a con depending on your philosophy. I view the swim as something to complete in a reasonable time without being exhausted. If you hope you rock the swim, you may want to add another swim session (on a slide day perhaps) or do the competitive program (which includes the option of a 3rd swim session). But the 2 per week swim worked for me and my goals. It worked out to about 5000 yds/week. I suppose you could do more yardage while sticking to 2 sessions/week if you’re worried.
Now for some cons:
1) Only 2 swim sessions per week is not enough according to some folks but it fit my goals nicely. (see above).
2) Some of the bike and run workouts are longer the other half iron training program I’ve seen. The longest run was 2:15 (about 14 miles for me) and the longest bike was 4:15 (about 70 miles). Still, come race day, I felt more than ready because of it. It’s the first time during a tri that I wasn’t wondering why the hell am I doing this and when is it gonna be over. However, I did experience some hip pain near the end of the program so maybe it was a lot for my body to handle. Long story short, listen to your body.
3) It’s not personalized. I was worried about this one since I’ve purchased custom plans from the internet in the past with pretty good results. “How could a program from a book compare to an expensive, personalized program from a real coach?” I wondered. Well, from this experience, it compares very favorably and for a truckload less money. You could buy an aero helmet with the money you save.
Just one additional point. I was a bit rusty since I slacked so bad in the off season, so I decided to do the first week of the intermediate program for a month to prepare myself for the 16 week program. This turned out to be a very good idea. So I essentially turned this 16 week program into a 20 week program. You may not need to do that but I thought I would just throw it out there.
In summary, this book was exactly what I needed to prepare for my first ever half ironman. I highly recommend it. I would have been happy with 6:20 but my secret dream goal that I didn’t anyone about was to break 6hrs. I demolished even my dream goal by 20 solid minutes! I never felt so great after a tri in my life. If you got through this review, then you’ll have no problem with a half ironman. I hope it helped and may you demolish your dream goal too!

Great book for any self coached age grouper!

Don Fink's book is the best "How to" book in triathlon that I have read. It is an easy read and yes, it does have the obligatory real people stories that are the fillers in a "How to" book, but Don is a master at simplicity and he gets it. What he gets is what people want (well, what I want) in a triathlon "How to" book: Simplicity, explanations of why and guidelines; lots of guidelines. Don Fink puts it all together in a clear and concise read that includes a "competitive, intermediate and just to finish" workout plan. Is it for everyone, well, if you are an age-grouper who chooses to self-coach, then YES, it is for everyone. I have also read Don's book called Be Iron Fit. This book parallels Be Iron Fit in simplicity but varies in ways that matter when racing the Half Iron distance. You can choose to modify the training programs in the book to suit your own needs or goals but still use his simplistic approach as a guide. Probably the best thing I liked about the Iron Fit program, which returns in this book is the regularity of the workouts, week after week. He varies the intensity and duration but every Monday is off or slide day, Tuesday is a run, Wednesday is a bike/run etc. Other trainers weekly programs have you varying from week to week. As an age group triathlete and someone who works 9-5 every day, routine is something I can plan for, with my family, workout partners and work. Excellent book that I would highly recommend to any self coached triathlete.

Another triathlon training gem by Don Fink

When I first started in triathlon, I bought and read 7 books by various authors/coaches. Don's style stood out to me as a perfect balance of providing the technical know-how that I lacked, as well as the plain language common sense perspective which I enjoy and prefer to learn from. This book approaches the half iron-distance approach in a similar manner to his earlier books which focused on the full Ironman distance. It works. Using Don Fink's guidance, I went from couch potato to Kona and 70.3 World Championship qualifier over the course of seven years, while enjoying every minute of the journey.

Whether your goal is to go from the couch to completion of your first 70.3, or to eventually test your full potential at the distance, you simply do not need to look further. He's been there and done that, but more importantly, he's helped a vast number of individuals (including me) do the same thing.

A Rattling Good Read

This great book hits an excellent balance between hilarious, often heart-warming anecdotes, and factual information about Bali and Balinese culture. The trials and the triumphs of the author's life in paradise makes for a rollicking good read. The pages are alive with great characters, both human and animal (with particular mention of her wonderful dogs!) and situations that elicit many a belly-laugh. As a regular visitor to Ubud over the last decade or so, I found much that was familiar, but discovered much more about Ubud, Bali and Balinese culture from the pages of Bali Daze. Can't wait for the sequel!

Brilliant Bali Book

I write guidebooks to Bali but this book tells the real story of what it's like to live on this island. Cat Wheeler is one of the best writers I know and her tales of living in the fabled town of Ubud are witty, insightful and always a fabulous read. Her story of living with Balinese pigs is a modern-day classic.

wonderful stories from Ubud, Bali

If you've ever been to Bali or just fancy a delve into a different culture, you will love this wonderful book. I roared with laughter at roasted spiders, animal antics and Balinese ceremony stories interwoven with local social and environmental issues. Life on this magical little island couldn't be more utterly different from life in the western world as you'll see when you read Cat Wheeler's fabulous book. Loved it!
