Islamophobia: Making Muslims the Enemy, by Peter Gottschalk, Gabriel Greenberg

In the minds of many Americans, Islam is synonymous with the Middle East, Muslim men with violence, and Muslim women with oppression. In the post-9/11 world, a clash of civilizations appears to be increasingly manifest and the War on Terror seems a struggle against Islam. These are symptoms of Islamophobia.

The term "Islamophobia" accurately reflects the largely unexamined and deeply ingrained anxiety many Americans experience when considering Islam and Muslim cultures. Historically, Americans have seldom given voice to these anxieties since they have had, until the last half-century, few connections to Muslim cultures and a small domestic Muslim minority. However, in times of crisis, such as the Iranian hostage situation or, most recently, the September 11th attacks, the long-simmering resentments, suspicions, and fears inherited along with a Christian European heritage manifest themselves most directly in conditions that appear to affirm Americans' darkest concerns. Like a vicious cyclone feeding off of its own energy, Islamophobia takes uncommon events as evidence fitting its worst expectations and turns these into proof that perpetuates those ill-informed expectations.

Islamophobia explores the presence of these anxieties through the political cartoon―the print medium with the most immediate impact. This book shows graphically how political cartoons dramatically reveal Americans' casual demonizing and demeaning of Muslims and Islam. And the villainizing is shown to be as common among liberals as conservatives. Islamophobia also discusses the misunderstanding of the Muslim world more generally, such as the assumption that Islam is primarily a Middle Eastern religion, where as the majority of Muslims live in South and Southeast Asia, and the misperception that a significant portion of Muslims are militant fundamentalists, where as only a small proportion are.

From Publishers Weekly
Gottschalk, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University, and his former student Greenberg analyze what Islamophobia is and how it is manifested through political cartoons, many of which are included with revealing results. The authors say that Islamophobia—a racistlike bias against Muslims based on stereotypes—is very real, manifesting in some cartoons that are obviously biased and others that appear on the surface to be more sympathetic. Cartoons, symbolic of wider feelings and paranoia about Islam, reflect misunderstandings and prejudice among Westerners and, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, often serve to widen cultural chasms, particularly between Muslims and American Christians. Symbols and caricatures, like the veil, the mosque, scimitars and large-nosed profiles, can be misused or conflicting; for example, the scimitar, frequently used to depict Muslim violence, is of doubtful Muslim heritage but is actually used in American military uniforms. Gottschalk and Greenberg offer a particularly chilling comparison of cartoon depictions of Jews prior to World War II and their Muslim counterpart caricatures today. Even cartoons mocking conservative Christians are more neutral and less intentional in their hatred, say the authors. With its incendiary cover art and on the heels of the Danish cartoon controversy, this book should attract well-deserved attention. (Oct.)

Review
This ground-breaking book should be read and reread-readers will become acutely aware how cartoonists have repeatedly disparaged all things Muslim and Arab. The book teaches us to see beyond damaging stereotypes. It is a remarkable achievement, illustrating that although there exists a fine line between satire and racism. (Jack G. Shaheen, author, Reel Bad Arabs)

If 9/ll jolted Americans into a new awareness of Islam, it has produced less insight and understanding than caricature and fear. Part of the knowledge gap is due to Muslims themselves, but the larger problem derives from deliberate distortions projected via the media (radio, TV, print and the Internet) in concert with scurrilous scholarship and Christian right Islamophobes. This deftly constructed and amply illustrated volume by Gottschalk and Greenberg will expose Islamophobic distortions while also providing a much needed antidote to their public venom. (Bruce Lawrence, Duke University)

As Islamophobia threatens to become the new anti-Semitism, Islamophobia: Making Islam the Enemy becomes 'must' reading. Gottschalk and Greenberg perceptively and graphically demonstrate the extent to which prejudice and discrimination against Islam and Muslims have become inherent in American mainstream culture. (John L. Esposito, author, What Everyone Needs to Know about Islam)

Islamophobia is an important contribution to the understanding of prejudice as a common factor in American culture, particularly the media. The analysis of political cartoons convincingly shows how pervasively anti-Arab and anti-Muslim attitudes have become accepted, even by people who probably consider themselves fair-minded. This study needs to be read by everyone concerned with the problems of religious and racial bias in America today. (Carl W. Ernst, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

A must read for anyone interested in understanding the underlying challenges that Muslims face in America. Provides an important insight into the stereotyping of Muslims that daily projects them as the different 'other.' (Yvonne Haddad, Georgetown University)

Islamophobia. Making Islam the Enemy is a very well-written, timely and incisive book about a topic that is finally starting to win the attention of the American public. The authors take the reader through a journey of Western suspicion and prejudicial depiction of the religion of Islam, from the Crusades to more recent political encounters with Muslim powers. They present a fascinating review of American media presentations of Islam and Muslims, including film, television and political cartoons. Islamophobia is a fairly presented, sharply critical expos of the roots and manifestations of western fear and suspicion of this important world religion. It should be required of every high school and college student of history, political science and American social studies. (Jane Smith, Hartford Theological Seminary)

Gottschalk, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University, and his former student Greenberg analyze what Islamophobia is and how it is manifested through political cartoons, many of which are included with revealing results...With its incendiary cover art and on the heels of the Danish cartoon controversy, this book should attract well-deserved attention. (Publishers Weekly)

Contains a thoughtful discussion and is bound to stimulate interest among readers. (Middle East Journal, Winter 2008)

This slim volume by Gottschalk and Greenberg is a splendid teaching tool for classroom use, not only because it provides a readily accessible narrative about American stereotyping of Islam and Muslims, but also due to its focus on the political cartoon. This would be a beneficial text for undergraduate courses on Islam or the Middle East, since it is both accessible and tackles a popular art form that has almost universal appeal. (Daniel Martin Varisco, Hofstra University; author of Islam Obscured: The Rhetoric of Anthropological Representation Contemporary Islam, December 3, 2008)

A Necessary Read for All Americans
By Thomas V. Millington
Ever since 9/11 I have been on the lookout for any book dealing with changed perceptions or heightened generalizations regarding Islam and Muslims. "Islamophobia" by Peter Gottschalk and Gabriel Greenberg is one of those books that must be read by Americans in this post-9/11 world.

This book starts off by reviewing the reaction of Muslims to the cartoon that appeared in the Danish news paper Jyllands-Posten, which portrayed the prophet Muhammad in a less than stellar light. From here the authors trace the depiction of Islam and Muslims throughout history and how this idea of the religion and its followers as backward, violent and primitive remains well-entrenched in the minds of many Western non-Muslim people. In the introduction, the authors make a statement that I think is right on target: That is they (views held by Americans) demonstrate how natural for so many Americans the image of Muslims as irrational aggressors and Americans as righteous innocents abroad and at home has become, so that any other perspective becomes not a counterargument but a challenge to an unquestionable world order." The authors skillfully present information to back up this statement.

From the history of Western perceptions of Islam, the authors go on to analyze political cartoons depicting Islams. Just before doing this they make a necessary distinction between caricature and stereotype. This is key, because I think for many people, caricatures and stereotypes are one and the same. Most people respond to visual stimuli and in the case of the cartoons, their lack of familiarity with Islam, coupled with a general post-9/11 resentment toward Muslim culture, allows them to formulate opinions based on the animations they read in the newspapers. For example, how many people know the difference between a Muslim and an Arab? The authors contend that too often people categorize all Muslims under the same category (violent, backward, oppressive, etc.)without any reference that may inhibit the formatin of inaccurate perceptions.

I could go on, but it is best for readers to read this book for themselves. I found it very interesting that in the 1950s cartoonists depicted Muslims as lazy and effeminate. Now, the depictions are much more savage in their portrayals. It seems that many cartoons follow the political winds blowing from Washington, DC.

Have you read the Koran? Better read before you judge people. In every race there are good and bad people. Were talking about what some do and strictly adhere to the real Koran.

Excellent work on analyzing Islamophobia through the medium of political cartoons
By Edgar Hopida
The new book Islamophobia: Making Muslims the Enemy by Peter Gottschalk and Gabriel Greenberg, is an excellent addition to the growing literature, study, and analysis of Islamophobia in the West. The authors give a working definition of what Islamophobia consists of in relation to other phobias in their introduction.

The first chapter deals with a very good but brief overview of Western interaction and reaction to Islamic civilization and Muslims. What is important to note is that this all came about way before 9/11 and that because of this long history, people in the West have an ingrained and often warped image about what the religion of Islam represents.

In this book, the focus is primarily the role of political cartoons in mainstream media that help shape everyday peoples' image of Islam and Muslims. The proceeding chapters give excellent examples of the imagery and effectiveness of conveying stereotypical images of Muslims and Islam.

For those interested in learning about Islamophobia, I recommend this book along with Dr. Mohamed Nimer's Islamophobia and Anti-Americanism: Causes and Remedies. For good essay on the topic, I recommend Dr. Ibrahim Kalin's essay entitled "Roots of Misconception: Euro-American Perceptions of Islam Before and After 9/11" which can be found online.

Christian Gnosis, by C W Leadbeater

Then shall the candidate be bound upon the wooden cross . . . After the third day he shall be brought back from the dead and carried up to heaven to be on the right hand of Him from whom he came. Surprisingly, these lines are from an Egyptian initiation ritual thousands of years before the Christian drama. Linking the two is just one fascinating element in this profound introduction to esoteric Christianity, as timely today as when it was first published in 1920. Famed clairvoyant Charles Webster Leadbeater was a bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, which preserves the sacraments while interpreting the scriptures with maximum freedom. He quotes St. Augustine himself saying that what we now call Christianity emerged at the very beginning of humanity as the one true religion. To access its transformative force, Leadbeater returns to original teachings and decodes its story symbolically as a guide for direct knowledge (Gr: gnosis) of the Divine. "As Christ had the Godhead behind Him, so have we the same power, although not yet unfolded as fully," he says. "Nevertheless, it is only a question of development, and that development is certain." With the authority of a scientist and a mystic, he addresses such topics as the birth of Christ in the heart; God's utter love; divine grace; angelic help; the true meaning of salvation; and reincarnation and the evolution of the soul.

Review
"Leadbeater was one of the most prolific clairvoyants writing at the turn of the last century. His works have remained extant and popular in New Age circles. This new edition of Christian Gnosis brings attention to one of his lesser known topics of exploration, esoteric Christianity. Customers who were raised Christian and have had trouble reconciling metaphysical practice with hierarchical Christian tradition will be relieved to find a version of Christianity that allows them to embrace the teachings of Jesus and still practice magic" --Anna Jedrziewski
, New Age Retailer

"This book of esoteric theology has as timely a message today as it had at the time of its writing, early in the 20th century. The author, a highly gifted seer as well as a clergyman, theosophist, and esoteric Christian, remains one of the most fascinating figures of the tradition of alternative spirituality This is definitely highly recommended." --Stephan Hoeller, Gnostic Bishop and author of Gnosticism: New Light on the Ancient Tradition of Inner Knowing, Jung and the Lost Gospel, and The Fool's Pilgrimage Second Edition: Kabbalistic Meditations on the Taro

"Christian Gnosis combines theosophical insight with esoteric ecclesiastical Christianity. It's a fascinating compendium of creative cosmology applied elegantly to the great questions of human existence."
--Andrew Philip Smith, author of A Dictionary of Gnosticism, The Gnostic: Journal and Publisher of The Bardic Press

"This Quest reprint, with its addition of excellent referencing, brings once more an outstanding work to any and all who are interested in the esoteric - whether they be Christian or not. It is not a theology; it is one man's journey of seeing beyond our earthly veil. Charles Leadbeater never sought to insist or impose, but to share and by that sharing bring a willingness in the reader to question and consider as they search for their own understanding of faith, and all that means. That is his greatest and most invaluable gift."
--The Right Reverend Graham Wale, Presiding Bishop of The Liberal Catholic Church

About the Author
Charles Webster Leadbeater (1847-1934) was a Church of England clergyman until he joined the Theosophical Society in 1883. He spent some years in Sri Lanka working for the revival of Buddhism, and later became the Presiding Bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, which seeks to combine the preservation of the Catholic sacraments with the widest measure of freedom of thought and interpretation of the scriptures. He was a highly developed clairvoyant and the author of over thirty books on the spiritual life and on the psychic nature of man. He unfolded and perfected his own psychic faculties under the guidance of his Adept teacher and in 1893 began his clairvoyant investigations, on occasion collaborating with Annie Besant, the second President of the Theosophical Society. His worldwide lectures presented a new viewpoint to thousands of people.

Excellent work
By Michael L. Moeller
This book is a wonderful summary of the blending between Theosophy and Christianity that Leadbetter facilitated. While one may have slightly different views than he did, his explanations and discussions are well worth contemplating and provide excellent sources for meditation. Leadbetter also has a very nice writing style that is easy to read without having to decipher what it is he's trying to say. I highly recommend this work for all seekers who are of a Christian slant.

5 stars for believers, 1.5 to 2 stars for skeptics, source of anger for Christian Evangelicals
By Mad Midwest Maggie
This book is a combination theosophist and gnostic retake on Christianity. If you are a believer in psychic methods of researching hidden history, if you believe that there is Christian truth that can be reached by "sensitives", and that truth corrects the Christian theology/traditions that have been passed on for most of two millennia, you might love this book. If you're a traditional Christian with even fairly orthodox views, the re-defining of Christian vocabulary and of Jesus may offend you or you might find yourself rolling your eyes at it. If you're a Christian Fundamentalist, Evangelical, strong Catholic, etc., than this book might, for you, be filled with intolerable heresy. CW Leadbeater is quite the storyteller. If no word he wrote had any truth to it, than it could be said that he is a most imaginative storyteller. Personally, I am not convinced by his writings. I believe that Christianity, as a revealed religion whose most major event took place in the public square is an exoteric religion, not an esoteric one. For example, I don't believe that person Jesus allowed himself to be a host body for a disembodied master, and that this was a secret to almost everybody for nearly the whole history of Christianity. Actually, to be quite honest, if you're an orthodox believer, this book comes across as just weird and random.

The logos
By peter
This is a decent work by C.W.
It's leadbeaters collected works on christianity really.
Now mind you leadbeater didn't have a nag hammadi library he died before the discovery . He simply uses the new testament ( the four gospels and the letters of Paul as well as the apostles creed ) he also offers soem commentary on the fragments of the gospel of Thomas ( he didn't know they were the gospel of Thomas he knew them as a fragments of a unknown gospel ) and i find his commentary rewarding.
But the whole book reminded me of his other work " masters and the path" . i felt he was rehashing his thoughts on indian mysticism here .
He gives a lot of space to the " logos" and what it means. Now Most translations of the word " logos" is wrong it has so many meanings to say it means just "word" is just one small part of its meaning. its a complex word and Leadbeaters attempts to explain in his own way.
ALL IN ALL C.W. leadbeater was a brilliant man .
why 4 stars? my issue was the lack of diversity in pictures. the same picture form the cover is used to segment off chapters of the book it gets tedious .

A great book for "armchair artists," too
By Lorraine M. Davis
I’m no artist, but I enjoy learning about an artist’s methods and getting inside an artist’s head. With this book, I was invited inside an artist’s heart.

Natalie Lombard is a Christian banner artist who shares both theoretical and practical insights about art in the church. Beginning with “God Is Far from Bland!” she gives compelling answers to both “Why was art removed?” and “Why does art need to be there?” Next Lombard tackles “How can you know if you are meant to make it?” In both these chapters, her life experiences kept me reading and thinking.

Lombard’s aim is to inspire, encourage, and mentor artists. She walks her readers through both the process of envisioning and making a banner, as well as launching a church banner ministry. I think Lombard is a natural teacher. She seems to know just the right details to share. The chapter “Art Commission” would help anyone working in a team. My favorite section describes one church art commission to show “how ideas evolve, how temperaments can conflict and can work together, the importance of prayer throughout the process, and how God took everyone to a much higher place than any of us had been previously.” In short, she models how to be God’s ready servant, which speaks to me, even if I never sew a stitch.

From there, Lombard details the how-to of banner making with the same thoughtful care. Lombard uses the word “comprehensive” to describe her book. It truly is comprehensive.

She devotes eleven pages to the task of planning a ministry, facing resistance, and building a team. Then she explains how to gather ideas. But that’s just the beginning of the planning she suggests. The methodical way she maps out a sanctuary was an eye opener; it’s details like this, how to know your banner-hanging space, that make Lombard’s book one-of-a-kind. After reading this, I knew I’d find every practicality explored in choosing a sewing machine (her ergonomic suggestions are worth the price of the book); designing a useful workspace; thinking through complex copyright issues; anticipating installation issues; designing the banner, and, of course, choosing, draping, and sewing the fabrics into glimpses of God’s splendor.

Through it all, Lombard shows by her life the “Christian” in “Christian artist.” Here’s just one example, from her chapter on how to design a banner:

“Remember to pray. Prayer will feed you. Prayer will feed everything you do. We think we hydrate by drinking a glass of water and hurrying into our day. Time spent with our Creator satisfies our thirst. . . . A moment with God is not some glimpse of the eternal we beg to see and then return to blandness. A God-moment is a vista, vibrantly—although silently—inviting you to ‘come see!’”

It’s obvious that Natalie Lombard followed Christ both in her career and in preparing this book for the next generation of Christian artists. “Splendor in Worship” is splendid indeed.

Encouragement for Christian artists
By Bethany
Part personal testimony, part art exhibit, and part how-to, this book has something for everyone. My favorite part was chapter 3, where Ms. Lombard talks about the personal impact her worship banners had on the people who saw them in their original context -- usually a church sanctuary. It is wonderfully refreshing and encouraging to read specifically how the Holy Spirit can use art to speak to people.

I am not a seamstress, and I will probably never make a worship banner, so the back third of the book wasn't very relevant to me (it includes very helpful specifics for creating banners, working with church art commission committees, etc.). But I am planning on giving my copy to a young Christian who loves to paint to inspire her with ideas of how she could use her painting for the Lord. I think anyone could benefit from the stories of how God speaks to us through art -- any and all artistic media included!

Lombard writes with enthusiasm and vulnerability. I was very touched by her personal stories of what she has learned -- what God has taught her -- along the way. And did I mention the photos of her art are beautiful?

The book is as beautiful as it the topic it addresses
By Karen B. Mains
This book is a MUST for those who are in the dialogue of why art is important in the church--specifically in worship. The book is as beautiful as it the topic it addresses. This is for any pastor who doesn't have a background in art and feels a little "lost" around the artists in his congregation. It is a great stimulus for worship teams. And it is hands-on training for the conceptual facilitator. I LOVED the practical suggestions for the banner tailor, the person at the sewing machine or the construction team who need to mount fabulous creations that fill a whole wall or become processional banners for high celebration days. A must buy for the church library, the pastor's study, or the fabric artist. Wonderful work!

Living the Life Unexpected: 12 Weeks to Your Plan B for a Meaningful and Fulfilling Future Without Children, by Jody Day

Across the globe, millions of women are reaching their mid-forties without having had a child. Although some are child-free by choice, many others are childless by circumstance and are struggling in a life they didn't foresee. Most people think that women without children either "couldn't" or "didn't want to" be mothers. The truth is much more complex. Jody Day would have liked to have had children, but it didn't work out that way. At the age of 44 she realized that her quest to be a mother was at an end. She presumed that she was through the toughest part, but over the next couple of years she was hit by waves of grief, despair and isolation. Eventually she found her way and created the Gateway Women Network, helping many thousands of women worldwide. Here she addresses the taboo of childlessness and provides a powerful, practical 12-week guide to help women come to terms with their grief, and to move on to live creative, happy, meaningful, and fulfilling lives without children. Previously titled Rocking the Life Unexpected, this inspiring and practical guide to a life without children has been extensively revised and updated, and includes significant additional content including extracts from the stories of 24 women and two men from around the world.

This book is a gem!
By JJ
The first time I opened this book was the first time that I felt understood as a childless woman. Each time I read this book, I learn something new, or I feel like I grow in some way. This book is better than therapy and I think that it should be required reading for all therapists and doctors who don't seem to have a clue about the lives, emotions and journeys of many childless women. Jody totally gets it, even though her childless journey is very different than mine. What I love about this book is that regardless of how you got here, she makes you feel understood and no longer invisible. She is also a great writer. This book is a gem!
