An all-night read well worth it

The book was released at midnight. I had it finished by 6 a.m. It is rare anymore that I read all night, even rarer is reading all night a book that does not have Stephen King on the cover. This is the conclusion of the Babylon series and, if Sam Sisavath continues the story arc in other directions (we still have most of the main characters-Lara, Danny, Keo, Gabby), series readers can stop now and not feel as if they're hanging in the breeze, unsatisfied. Or we can read more.

Wow...

I read this in 3 days. I couldn't put it down. And I had a pretty good idea how it was going to end, but I hoped I was wrong. I'm not going to give anything away, but I don't think I've ever cried so much through the last few chapters of a book. If you've been reading the series a and gotten attached to the characters as I have, be prepared to have your heart broken at least a few times. If you haven't read the series, do it. Start at the beginning and read them all. I've loved the Purge series since I read the first book. I know there had to be an end to the story, but I'm a little sad that it's over.

Happy but sad......

Sam does it again, such a great author with fantastic character development and a very satisfying "ending" to a series not to be missed !! I've been a fan of this series since the beginning and this was another great addition to the series, but am very sad that it is the conclusion. I love the characters and their growth over the span of the purge. I've mentioned it before, but it's so refreshing to have the women in this series be the leaders and heroines in many cases, thank you Sam! Yes, this was a dark conclusion, but there's no other way it could have been and still been true to the story. Fast paced non-stop action with some major losses, which also made it so suspenseful because no one was safe. I was disappointed at the reason given that Mabry chose to attack when he did, but not a deal breaker or anything but the reason for my 4 stars rather then 5 stars.
If Sam does decide to extend this story in different directions and with different characters, I'm still in! If you like the dystopia or zombie genre, you will love this series and blast through all 9 books in a flash.
So, this is bittersweet as it's a great book but I'm not sure I'm ready for it to be done. Regardless, go back and get the first book and get ready to shut down your life as you be obsessed with reading every book back to back. I'll re-read the entire series over and over again, as will you once you read the first chapter.

This incredibly insightful work chronicles the life of a psychologist and professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University who suffers from manic depression. Jamison began experiencing mood swings during adolescence but, despite her education and training, did not seek help until she had completed her doctorate and began teaching at UCLA. Like so many others suffering from manic depression, she felt initially that the depressions were only passing phases she'd have to work out herself. She experienced the manic phases as great periods of creativity and accomplishment and feared they would be deadened by using medication. (In an earlier book, Touched with Fire, LJ 2/15/93, Jamison explored the relationship between manic depression and creativity.) Jamison finally comes to grips with her illness and recognizes the importance of medication used in conjunction with psychotherapy. This combination of treatment controls her illness and has enabled her to succeed. Her story and writing style are both inspirational and educational. Highly recommended for all libraries.

This is an alright book. I bought it after a few years of thinking that I probably have bipolar disorder. Kay Redfield Jamison's writing is clear, accurate and interesting, though I would not call it beautiful. The book was great about breaking down the specifics of the illness and after finishing I felt I had a better understanding of the illness, felt positive that I was bipolar, and ultimately felt I had a better understanding of why I feel certain ways at certain times.
My beef with the book is that she doesn't acknowledge how exceptional her access to resources is. Like when she talks about running up her bills too high (I also have this problem) she just has her brother loan her the money to fix it. When she feels really sick, she has the best psychologist/psychiatrists watching her round the clock. It really doesn't work like that for most people. I am a 22 year-old boy supporting myself totally in NYC. I am broke, have no health insurence and no family members who will financially support me. I'll be lucky to afford seeing a shrink and paying for my medication, while she, on the other hand, had people calling her, watching her, making sure she wouldn't cause herself harm. It almost seems at parts of the book as if treatment sought her, instead of the other way around. if only i should be so lucky. I find it funny that she doesn't bring up how different another patients struggle might be without the priviledges she's had. So, it was kind of frustrating.

No More "Fear of the Fear of Flying"

I had my first and only manic episode at the age of forty-four, four years ago. In order to be diagnosed a manic-depressive (also know as "bi polar"), you have to have also an expisode of the opposite disorder. In my case, a brief period of depression preceded the mania.
When I went manic, I was brought to a hospital, nearly kicking and screaming. I didn't believe I had this disorder. If you are a family member of a manic-depressive, please understand that they are not capable of behaving normally when they are having an episode.
I didn't have to stay away from home too long because I was caught in a very early stage. I was lucky. This illness can devastate people's lives. Some of us must face it and fight it on a daily basis. When I got out of the psychiatric hospital and initally met the "psychopharmarcologial"* shrink who is my doctor now, he said to me at my first visit: "I would like you to read AN UNQUIET MIND, by Kay Jamison. She is a research scientist who is also a manic-depressive."
So I did. And, do you know what? It helped me to feel comforted. I no longer felt alone. I no longer felt quite so nervous about "trusting my brain", which had never let me down before.
I don't feel as guilty for the foolish things I did while manic, nor I do feel as embarrassed. The shame can be haunting for some people. This book helps dispel that. Dr. Jamison is very honest about all the foolish and self destructive things she did. Because I read this book, I understand that I have a neurological disorder that up until recently was very poorly understood. Because of reading this book, I realize that it takes stalwart dedication and, in my case, a love of my family to maintain myself on the road to good health. Otherwise, sure, I would be tempted to "fly" again, just as Kay Jamison did. Her honesty about the damage she did to herself and to her relationships, and her willingness to be open about the seductive nature of this disease has helped me remain on the path to good health.
Read this book and dispel some of your confusion about this not so uncommon, not all that glamorous disorder. And then go hug your family, or your s.o.-- or yourself. Hang tough and don't be afraid. Best wishes, Jean

A solid introduction to screenwriting fundamentals

It's a good book, but I do believe that it teaches you how to write a good script, not necessarily a great script. It contains the fundamentals from a methodical point of view, but in terms of insight and fundamentals it comes nowhere near to Linda Seger's very own book "Creating Unforgettable Characters". In terms of screenwriting fundamentals, you can buy this book. You could also buy Screenplay by Syd Field. These two books are very much alike.

No holds barred guidelines for future filmmakers.

I was required to take this for my college courses at UTA Arlington and it wasn't a let-down; the author manages to use references to other movies (well-known or not) without distracting from the creative flow she's trying to invoke upon her readers and it adds to one's own awareness of what they use to carve out their own story.

To be frank, anyone can write, just like anyone can act, drive a car or any other function but with writing, there's no telling what you're good at or interesting in writing about until you learn some simple yet effective shortcuts from this helpful book.

On the high end
This is exactly what every professional needs in the arsenal. It really is a thorough dismantel of the script. Linda discusses common mistakes and remedies them. Reading and applying the knowledge in this book should improve any screenwriter. Give Linda your money now.

On the low
- I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner. There's a lot of nitpicking. It will probably have most of you worrying so much that you will never finish your script. Write your script first, then rewrite it a few times, then read Linda's book, then rewrite it 6 more times. :)

- A lot of it feels like common sense to me and I get tired of the example movies, especially if I haven't seen the movie. Zzzzz..... I get the urge to skip over several paragraphs in each chapter to make it move faster and I find myself telling to the author "Yeah, I get it."

- I think that a lot of what is in this book can be driven out of oneself with the proper attitude... something along the lines of "Appreciate your readers time."

Pair this with a basic book on formatting and your screenwriting library should be near complete. Beyond that, read and write screenplays until you can write a great screenplay yourself. Then call Linda up so she can tell you what to fix in yours!

Alaska Home is by Debbie Macomber. It is the third book in the Alaska series. It is actually three books in one.
Falling for Him is the story of Christian and Mariah. Christian is the youngest of the O’Hallorans and the man behind the idea of bringing in ladies for the pilots and men of Hard Luck, Alaska in order to keep their pilots from quitting. His choice for secretary of their airplane business turns around and leaves. She has no intention of staying. Mariah Douglas did come and stay. Unfortunately, Christian takes a dislike to her and she, in turn, has a crush on him. This makes her extremely clumsy when Christian is around. She isn’t that way with the others. After her year in Alaska is over, Christian once more sets out to make her leave. Will he succeed? The book is cute and has some very humorous situations.
Ending in Marriage is book two and is the story of Duke Porter and Tracy Santiago. Duke is the best and the first of the pilots to sign on with the 0’Hallorans. He is the most vocal and the least gentlemanly of them. Tracy Santiago is a Seattle attorney who was sent by Mariah Douglas’ family to bring her back home and to sue the O’Halloran brothers. When Tracy traveled to Hard Luck, she rode with Duke Porter who was attracted to Tracy but hit it well beneath his contempt for her as a liberated woman. Tracy quickly determined that Mariah was here under her own terms and there was no case. However, they remained friends. Now Tracy has returned to Hard Luck to attend Mariah’s wedding. Her pilot is none other than Duke Porter. What will happen now? Sparks do fly and the fun begins.
The extra novella in this book is Midnight Sons and Daughters. It is the story of Scott O’Halloran, the adopted son of Sawyer O’Halloran and Chrissie Harris, daughter of one of the men in Hard Luck. The two grew up together after Scott’s Mother answered the ad for “work, a cabin, and 20 acres” offered by the O’Halloran brothers. She became the town librarian. As the only girl in town, Chrissie immediately became the best friend of Scott’s sister Susan. After having a crush on Scott as a child, Chrissie is determined not to get her heart involved with him again. She is a lawyer now working in hard Luck and Scott is newly retired from the military. He returns to Hard Luck to work for his Dad and Uncles. Sparks fly when they meet again. Can Chrissie keep her heart to herself?
The three books make the book fantastic. There is a lot to read and enjoy.

SPSS was the bane of my undergraduate degree. I am still not a fan of the software (even though it can do amazing things). It's a pain to learn and figure out the very specific ways to input data in to SPSS. This book was really a lifesaver, and spelled out (step by step) the proper way to do various functions with SPSS. It really saved me throughout the semester!

Side B holds the "remixes" of these poems, in the form of blackout poetry, also known as "found poetry." Side B gives the material a fresh twist by creating new poetry out of Side A. There is also a very special surprise at the end of each track. Alicia decided to self publish this effort after leaving her publishing house. She views this book as her "independence" and official separation from that venture. She also drew the front and back cover herself. Alicia is a contributing writer for many blogs and news outlets, including the Huffington Post and multiple Gannett Publications. Alicia combines human experiences with the music she's listening too in the form of a book...that's actually a mixed tape. This beautiful piece of art is a good read and great gift idea. All the royalties go to a great cause. Buy a few copies of this book - you'll be glad you did and giving back.

It's alright.. I just read Rupi Kaur's milk and honey And it was deep, honest, & relatable. I'm not going to lie I ordered this book based off the reviews the first page tells you it fiction so it set the tone for me. Wasn't really into it ..... It's too random for me not really themed. Like if this was a diary I stumbled across accidentally I wouldn't even want to read the secrets. 3 stars because I respect the creativity it's super genius the cassette tape, the tracks....
