Much of the momentum for this pro� gram has been provided by interaction with industrial companies, and the influx of a large number of industry-supported students. This program had a need for a course in microwave semiconductor devices, which covered the physical aspects, as well as the aspects of interest to the engineer who incorporates such devices in his designs. It was also felt that it would be im� portant to introduce the most recently developed devices (HFETs, HBTs, and other advanced devices) as early as possible.

This book has a large number of figures taken directly from technical publications; however, there is only one author, making the presentation more coherent than most edited books, and the book is quite well done, including copious figures, equations, and references. Chapters (paraphrased):

5- Fundamental limits on power output
6- Circuit aspects of two-terminal devices

This book is a survey, but at a higher level, and has considerable detail. You would be hard-pressed to find any textbook with more information on microwave devices; one would have to consult specialized treatises or papers.

Adds a folkloric aspect that many other similar reference works lack

I've always been a big fan of Claude Lecouteux's work, and when I heard he was publishing a reference work relating to Germanic lore, I pre-ordered it at once. It finally arrived, and I've had a chance to look through it. And it is everything I had hoped it would be.

The obvious comparisons are going to be made between this work and other reference works on Germanic religion and mythology, such as A Dictionary of Northern Mythology (probably the standard in the field, at least in English), Cassell's Dictionary of Norse Myth & Legend (Cassell Reference), Norse Mythology: A Guide to Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs, and to a lesser extent Encyclopaedia of the Viking Age.

Where Lecouteux's book distinguishes itself from those titles is both in its lack of focus on the Norse material and the Viking era (although it does not distance itself from either), as well as its inclusion of tons of folkloric references, rather than sticking to the same old themes found in Norse and/or Germanic mythology. And that in particular is where this work shines, since this is a focus that all too few such works, let alone Asatruar who endeavor to recreate the Germanic mindset, have.

That the book was originally written in French (and, I presume, published in that language) gives the entries an international appeal that is so often denied to those of us without fluency in a variety of European languages. The sources span the gamut from Germany, France, Poland, Scandinavia, and even further afield. Just having access to condensed entries based on that broad range of material is a reason to get this book.

But to take a few of the more interesting entries as examples of the breadth and depth of the coverage, we have subjects as varied as Hernoss, a sort of idol that was still to be found in Norway in the 19th century, a brief discussion of changelings (children who are stolen from their parents and substituted with supernatural children), a lengthy discussion of Perchta, and Ourk, said to be the name of the leader of the Wild Hunt in a district in the Tyrol. This in addition to the standard entries on Norse gods and mythological themes that one would expect in a book of this type.

All in all, this is a fantastic book, and well worth it for the wealth of folkloric sources, as well as the conventional entries informed by folklore, that it brings to the table. I don't think it replaces Simek's Dictionary, but rather it accompanies it well, filling in all manner of gaps. It definitely stands as a worthy addition to any Asatruar's library. Five stars out of five.

About the Author
S. Christian Albright received his B.S. degree in mathematics from Stanford in 1968 and his Ph.D. in operations research from Stanford in 1972. Since then, he has been teaching in the Operations and Decision Technologies Department in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He has taught courses in management science, computer simulation, and statistics to all levels of business students: undergraduates, MBAs, and doctoral students. His current interest is in spreadsheet modeling, including development of VBA applications in Excel. Dr. Albright has published more than 20 articles in leading operations research journals in the area of applied probability. He has also published a number of successful textbooks, including DATA ANALYSIS AND DECISION MAKING, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, and SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS.

CD is the key

If you buy this book, you must also buy the CD as well.
You have to practice it in order to under the VBA function.
It is not an easy concept. For example, you write a simple program and one missing
dot will not be able to debug.
This book has good information.
Remember purchase the CD to make it worth.

Good book to start

This is a good starting book for anyone who wants to learn VBA but I feel it lacks coverage. Many times, for fairly simple programs, I had to google information on how to code becasue the information was not in the book.

Excellent Workbook and Reference

I am a self-taught VBA user who has had no classes, training, or mentoring on this particular language. Before this book, I knew enough to simplify some tasks and draw "ooo"s and "aahh"s from peers. I am now progressing in my career, and VBA is an essential skill for the positions in my interest. So, I decided to try to solidify my understanding of the language and its capabilities.

This book was the perfect choice. After just a couple hours of reading, skimming, and analyzing the examples given, I have made major improvements to several programs I had played around with in the past. I am much more confident in my ability, and I have only scratched the surface of this text. If you already have programming experience, most of the first 12 or so chapters can be skimmed, and you should find the multiple example programs extremely helpful with minimal time and effort. If you are new to programming, these beginning chapters will get you started. The examples are practical and interesting. If you need to learn VBA for Excel, this is the way to go.

Worth the read

This is a great read for the tween set. The author sets a good pace for the level of reading and she had me at the opening paragraphs with that foggy setting and the stranger. Yikes! I really liked Claudia - a typical thirteen-year-old whose character arcs nicely in the story. Well written. I can't imagine anyone in the tween set not liking this. I did, and I'm an adult. I hope to see more of Claudia in the future.

Great fantasy story.

It's her thirteenth birthday so she's expecting the usual birthday cards from the usual people. She's not expecting to get an old letter from her grandfather she never knew and has been dead for years!

The author and Publishing Push shared a copy of this book with me for review (thank you). It has been published. You can find it on Amazon.

The letter tells of a theft long ago and tells her she's the only who can solve the mystery and save her grandmother, Daisy, from being hung for the crime. She's not sure how to do that, so she decides to visit the area in London where the crime was committed.

I knew I was going to like this story as I got started reading but when the author adds a magical cat, she got all my attention. Not only that, there's a beautiful dollhouse full of details, a mini grandfather clock that doesn't work and much more. This is fantasy read that is just right for younger readers. It was also just right for me.

Claudia discovers she can travel through time and meets a young man who becomes a friend and works with her to try to solve the crime.

There's an evil man who wants to use magic to take over the world, a good witch, her grandmother, and more in the past. She learns that as she changes the past, she changes the present, too. She also learns she's not done with her quest. Now Hugo is in trouble!

I enjoyed this story enough it's going in my personal library. I'll be watching for the next book. You ought to read it, too.

A magical adventure

Sometimes you read a book that is so magical, it transports you out of the real world for a short while. The Spell of Pencliff is one of those such books. I bought it for my daughter but had a quick peep at the first page. I was hooked and read it all in one sitting. This has all the perfect ingredients of a children's story, but grown-ups, you're going to love it too. It brought to mind all of my favourite childhood books.

The main character Claudia is a great role model for young children, caring and compassionate, yet feisty and adventurous. She was the perfect choice to take on a time-travelling magical adventure and I loved her feline companion Sekora. In fact, all of the characters were great and had some fantastic names. The story is easy enough for tweens to follow but full of enough well written twists to keep you engrossed. I was kept guessing throughout, carried along as the suspense built and secrets were revealed.

The short chapters are an ideal length to read a chapter a night as a bedtime story but you're going to want to keep reading to the end - be warned. I'm looking forward to sharing this book with my children, I know they're going to enjoy it as much as I did. I also can't wait for the next book in what is going to be an amazing series.

About the Author
Lennarth Petersson is a model maker and draughtsman who has spent many years studying eighteenth-century rigs and rigging. He has written for journals and periodicals and, amongst many commissions, has produced detailed visual interpretations of the Vasa for the Statens Sjohistoriska Museet in Stockholm. He lives in Sweden.

Nice but disappointing

I love the concept of this book and should get to know the earlier volume on square rigged ships. Wonderful clear drawings break the rigging of three museum models of vessels typical of their types into easy to follow units. But this is surely a great opportunity missed.

I am not qualified to critique the two sections of the book for my interest lies in the English cutter, and here I have to say that I was disappointed. The rigging on the museum model is reproduced without comment and without apparently any investigation of its authenticity. The rigging shown for the cutter is that of a late C18th vessel, and some of it does not ring true. The running (adjustable length) bowsprit for example is shown with stays too long to work at the shortest setting of the bowsprit, and these are pulled tight not with tackle operable from inboard but with lashings that would have been inaccessible at sea.

It would be fabulous to marry accurate drawings of this quality to descriptive and thus educational labels identifying features of the rigging by name and authorative notes explaining why the rigging was set up this way and describing its unusual features. Notes indicating typical proportions for pendants or the spacing between rows of deadeyes for example would be nice. Adding the sizes for rope and blocks taken from Steel or some other period source would be very helpful to the modeler. Some discussion of rigging not seen on the museum model would good too -- the boom guy or mainsail reef tackle for example. The drawing of the shrouds is very nice, but it shows only one side of the vessel with the fall of the shrouds turned up on the aft side of the shroud -- how is the modeler to figure out that on the other side of the vessel they would be turned up on the fore side?

This is a good book, and I do not regret owning it. It does not pretend to be an academic work and it springs from the author's considerable tallent as a draughtsman, but I can't help feeling that with some collaboration this could have been spectacularly succesful.

Worthy companion to Rigging Period Ship Models

Petersson has added a significant resource for builders of model sailing ships. As with his earlier work on the square rig, the layout and content of the new volume leave little to the imagination of the reader. Clearly drawn and fully labeled illustrations not only show how individual rigging elements go together, but also impart understanding of how the rigging 'works'.

Detailed attention is given to three 19th century ship types (cutter, lugger, and schooner) from three different countries (Britain, France, and the U.S. respectively). The line by line sequences of illustrations are easier to work with and understand than the tangles of numbered lines that often appear on plan sheets accompanying models. The reader can quickly determine where and how the standing end of a line is fixed, it's route through blocks, and where and to what the line is belayed.

The book does not address related matters such as basic line preparation procedures (whipping, worming, parceling, serving, etc.), knots and splices, line size or type, or sail making.

One element that might be added in a future edition would be station lines on the profile, deck plan, and generalized body plan views of each of the subject vessels. Their addition would help relate location of individual rigging elements to the shape of the hull as well as to mounting and belaying locations on the ship.

This excellent book is of special use to the ship modeler of any experience level. It shows the correct way to run the rigging lines for three different examples of this type of craft. It also allows modelers working on similarly rigged craft to make some well-informed decisions about how to rig those craft AND on what details to add that are not mentioned in the plans and instructions. Since rigging plans are usually one of the weakest points in the plans and instructions in kits, this book can be invaluable.

Has depth and breadth

Compared to other Mechatronics books I've read, this one has a lot of depth. It goes into a wide variety of subjects, but they're treated with enough detail that these concepts can be reapplied.

Good book on design & analysis for the engineer

Mechatronics represents a process that blends mechanics and electronics with use of precision engineering, computer science, information technology, control system theory, and sensor and actuator technology to design improved products and processes. This book, unlike many in the field, is aimed at upper level undergraduate engineers, not hobbyists or technicians. Therefore a certain amount of mathematical maturity is required. The objectives of this book are:

1. Mathematical modeling of physical systems

2. Building a common set of differential equations of electrical and mechanical systems.

3. Engineering analysis of integrated mechatronics systems in time and frequency domain.

4. Application of integrated modelng and instrumentation techniques to design and analyze an industrial mechatronic system.

This text offers up tutorials on dynamic system modeling, electronic components and analysis, mechanical components and analysis, robotics, sensors/transducers and instrumentation, stepper motors, dc and ac motors and drives, hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, fluidics, automatic control, digital processing and hardware, communication and interfacing, software tools, design, and prototyping. However, it does not pretend to be a definitive textbook on any of these subjects. Instead, it assumes the reader has a previous exposure to all of these subjects but has not seen how to design a unified system using all of these types of devices and disciplines. There are plenty of examples, figures, and equations throughout the book, and the mathematics should not be difficult for any upper level undergraduate engineer to grasp. The final chapter shows some case studies in Mechatronics design which includes the obvious- a robot design. The appendices provide additional background on Laplace and Fourier transform techniques, and software tools including MATLAB, SIMULINK, and LabVIEW. The book emphasizes practical situations and applications with numerous worked examples, problems, and exercises. I highly recommend it to students of mechanical and electrical engineering who want to learn to design with a unified outlook on these two fields.

Good book for educational purposes

This book suits well to educational purposes at the university level. It has really wide material collected into one book, which makes it easier for the students and saves their time. If reviewed from the educational point of view, the book deserves four stars.

The book works also as a reference book for engineers and researchers, although for more serious research purposes there are books that go deeper in some specific areas.
