Wow. Now THAT'S how you write a gay convert.

Just like with Demetri in Maelstrom, Yamila has written a real-life straight boy who follows his heart into the arms of the man he belongs with, and she does it in such a believable fashion the characters will stick deep in your heart.

For fellow lovers of the "pretend boyfriend" trope, welcome to your new favorite story.

Ryan, the main character, parties just a little too incautiously his first year in college, and gets his due for it - the pretty boy gets tossed into prison at the tender age of eighteen, and we all know where that leads.

Except it doesn't. Ryan smartens up pretty damn quick once he realizes how much his life is about to change, and the best decision he makes is to put himself under the "protection" of fellow inmate Harrison, who is charismatic, older, wiser (seriously, the dude is really smart) and in the powerful position of boss drug dealer of the prison. He quickly learns that while Harrison is tough and in control, he's also kind, trustworthy, and a good friend. As he comes to rely on Harrison, he finds himself realizing he'd do anything for the man, and if what Harrison wants is a real relationship instead of a pretend one, well...

Harrison has been down in prison for years, and he's been around long enough that he knows sex is much more easily found than a real romantic connection. He's past that. He wants a "special friend" to get rid of the loneliness of prison, and sees in Ryan an opportunity to find that, but he doesn't just glance at his cute face and sign him up. At first he only pretends to take Ryan as his boy out of compassion for the new kid's safety, but once he comes to know Ryan's intelligence and personality as well, he decides they could have something real.

This story is well thought out, the prison setting is immersive, and Harrison's upfront romantic persistence lends a delicious overtone of sexual tension. (Early on, Ryan snarks that Harrison wants his ass, and Harrison tells him straight up that yeah he does, but he wants his heart first. The matter-of-fact declaration of intent renders Ryan speechless.) And when they do get into a sexual relationship, hoo damn. It may be winter but I didn't need as many sweaters on by the time I was done reading, that was for sure.

(IMPORTANT - For those negatively affected by stories about hardcore drugs, like me, the drugs are mostly just a part of the plot and prison culture. The characters are not featured as addicts and I don't believe its use in this story will trigger anyone.)

Unprison is getting a permanent slot right next to the Maelstrom compilation in my Kindle library. I can't wait to see what Yamila has for us next.

You Know What They Do to Guys Like This in Prison

Where do I even start? A premise like this is just too hot to handle, and full of great characters, rich plot development, and hot steamy sex. There's a beautiful slow burn throughout this, from our protagonist overcoming his fear of being incarcerated and getting used, to the suspense of what will actually happen to him (will he be protected? will he have any choice?). There's a couple times when you truly worry, but this book is excellently written and works through the emotions of showing just how love and acceptance can overcome fear and strange situations.

Plus, did I mention the steamy, hot sex? :D

Yaoi in a believable prison scenario.

Although the prison setting sounded like something I wouldn't be interested in reading, I am so glad I gave this story a chance. The idea of a prison m/m romance may lead you to believe it's going to be non-con or something, but it MOST DEFINITELY ISN'T. The relationship between the two characters starts as a platonic protector/protectee relationship and develops convincingly into romantic involvement. The characters were well-written and believable...I kept reading past the (amazingly hot) sex scenes just to find out what happens to the two protagonists. It is obvious that lots of research was put into developing a believable prison environment and relationship. The ending was not what I was expecting either. I was thinking "there's only so many ways this story could end, and not many of them are happy." But I was pleasantly surprised!

I am graduating from college and I just purchased this book to get ready for my first job after college. What information is out-of-date? I don't want to embarrass myself at my new job.

From what I have read so far, this is a good book. It offers a refresher on etiquette, and notes some things that I hadn't considered.

I ended up getting an B+ for this one credit course. The book was easy to read and to the point. There are great stories as well as etiquette instructions with good explanations in it as well. The etiquette book was required materials for the course.

...FOR GIVING AWAY THE ENDING OF THE NOVEL.

Here's a rule for all book reviewers: DO NOT GIVE AWAY THE ENDING TO THE NOVEL. That's something readers may want to discover for themselves!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and, like others, found myself simultaneously entranced and infuriated by Sutter Keely. Sutter is, for all of his faults,a likable person, but the world is moving past him while he's standing still: his best friend Ricky is moving past all of their partying and wild times and into a serious romantic relationship; the other students at school are looking past the "now" and into the future of college and work; even Sutter's own family is moving on in their own ways, while Sutter deludes himself that the Spectacular Now is enough for him.

"Voice" in YA novels is everything, and this novel certainly has that: Sutter Keely is a very familiar character (we all remember "that guy" from high school) and yet is uniquely his own person.

Highly recommended for both teens and adults: this novel is by turns warm, witty, wise, and heartbreaking.

Oh, and one more time: REMOVE THE SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL REVIEW OR ELSE WARN THAT IT SPOILS THE ENDING.

Not Spectacular at all

There were parts of this story that made me laugh out loud, but I was let down by the ending. There was no redemption for the characters, they didn't grow or change or improve their lives in any way. It just sort of ended. I was left feeling terribly for the characters, angry that one character had been dragged down into the drunkenness of the main character, disappointed that they couldn't rise above their issues. I don't need a happily ever after, but this bleak end to the story left me wondering why anyone would bother making this into a movie.

Really good, and brutal story: The movie is a travesty in that there is almost no connection between the actual characters as described and this book. On the other hand, that made it easy to read, because I forgot that I saw the movie first, a page into reading because of the differences.

Shindo examines the images of Dust Bowl migrants in photography, fiction, film, and song and marks off the various distances between these representations and the realities of migrant lives. He shows how photographer Dorothea Lange, novelist John Steinbeck, Hollywood filmmaker John Ford, and folksinger Woody Guthrie, as well as folklorists and government reformers, sympathized with the migrants' plight but also appropriated that experience to further their own aesthetic and ideological agendas.

The haunted look of Lange's "Migrant Mother" and other photos, the powerful story of the Joad family in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Ford's poetic cinematic adaptation of that novel, and the gritty plainfolk lyrics of Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads have all combined to portray the migrants as the quintessential victims of the Great Depression. Shindo, however, contends that these artists failed to fully grasp the realities of "Okie" culture and seemed far more concerned with promoting views and agendas that the migrants themselves might have found inaccurate or unappealing.

Shindo's study shows us how art can dominate history in the popular mind and illuminates the ways in which artists blend aesthetics and politics to make a personal statement about the human condition. His book not only increases our understanding of a tragic era in American history but also expands the scope of current histories of the American West to include cultural representations and their importance.

Our notions of the "Okies" who migrated to California during the 1930s Dust Bowl, according to historian Shindo (Louisiana State Univ.), have been shaped largely, and falsely, by Dorothea Lange's documentary photography, Woodie Guthrie's music, and John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, later made into a film by John Ford. Each of these artists, he argues, used the Okie "victims" to advance a liberal agenda with small regard for their subjects' real concerns. Shindo's thesis derives in part from James Gregory's American Exodus (LJ 9/15/89), which is more balanced. One wonders, for example, in reading that Guthrie's "use of the office of folksinger aligned him with intellectuals and civil servants against the migrants," whether he is judging too harshly and whether, in fact, he has his own agenda. I ended up purchasing several copies of this substantial career handbook for anyone seeking a satisfying work life after all the rules have changed. My father worked for a major corporation for forty years. His loyalty ensured that he moved slowly up the ladder from salesman to the rung just below the vice president tier. Before he had a chance to enjoy that stratum, the '80s hit, and the company brought in young leadership, gave "golden parachutes," to the executives over 55, and ditched the "lifetime loyalty," concept. Dad took his parachute, his dignity, and regretted his loyalty, his untaken paid vacations, and all the things he might have done.
Three days ago I dropped off my son at college. I have been telling him for years that he must discover what his passions and genuine interests, and find several career paths that might allow him to work at what he loves. This book is for him to read after he switches majors a time or two, and understands that his career will quite likely consist of many phases, not rungs on a ladder, but sideways moves, acquiring skills, experience and expertise, until he can move up or over to the spot that he loves most, and allows him the financial freedom that is most necessary, not simply the most.
I will give this book to each of my two daughters, with their very different personalities and likely career interests. Unlike many of the career coaching guides out there today, Joanne Cleaver has packed these pages with hard facts, research, interviews, and practical knowledge that serves as a map for this unchartered territory. This book is simply a must-read for anyone beginning, in the midst of, or struggling with a career. The rules changed long ago; here, finally, is the way to play the game. The exciting part is that it sounds like a lot of fun, if you just let go of the ladder, understand the lattice, and begin your own personal climb!

Puts a new face on an existing process. Not without good advice but nothing exciting. If you're in a rut, it may help somewhat.
