The Rise and Fall of Nations, by Ruchir Sharma

International Bestseller

"Quite simply the best guide to the global economy today." ―Fareed Zakaria

Shaped by his twenty-five years traveling the world, and enlivened by encounters with villagers from Rio to Beijing, tycoons, and presidents, Ruchir Sharma’s The Rise and Fall of Nations rethinks the "dismal science" of economics as a practical art. Narrowing the thousands of factors that can shape a country’s fortunes to ten clear rules, Sharma explains how to spot political, economic, and social changes in real time. He shows how to read political headlines, black markets, the price of onions, and billionaire rankings as signals of booms, busts, and protests. Set in a post-crisis age that has turned the world upside down, replacing fast growth with slow growth and political calm with revolt, Sharma’s pioneering book is an entertaining field guide to understanding change in this era or any era.

Review
“How do you write a compelling book about which nations will rise and fall over the next five years? Probably not by suggesting that it’s mostly random, except for extreme policy mistakes. True, Ruchir Sharma, head of emerging markets at Morgan Stanley, offers much more than that in The Rise and Fall of Nations. He recounts his exhaustive global travel that has him meeting with Vladimir Putin on one page and listening to George W. Bush analyzing Vladimir Putin on the next, and he describes his massive research effort aimed at spotting “ten clear rules” to follow based on a huge database of many nations and many decades” (William Easterly - The Wall Street Journal)

“In this lively and informative book, Sharma explains his system of 10 rules for identifying economies with good potential. Among the striking conclusions is his bearishness about China, largely because of its huge and growing indebtedness.” (Martin Wolf - Financial Times)

“What determines whether countries succeed or fail? That’s the big question Ruchir Sharma sets out to answer in The Rise and Fall of Nations…Sharma’s mission is as ambitious as it is well-executed. A mix of humble pragmatism and daring decisiveness make his tips compelling and credible…The author backs up each of the rules with a combination of hard facts and colourful anecdotes gathered on his travels…Sharma’s tried and tested tenets and eloquent delivery will reward anyone hoping to understand what determines the fickle fortunes of nations.” (Katrina Hamlin - Reuters)

“Entertaining, acute and disarmingly honest. . . . [Sharma] has a knack for sharp comparisons between countries. Australia’s history of high immigration is contrasted with Japan’s insularity. . . . He is pithy, too. In countries with rotten financial systems, ‘a shake-up of banking is a shake-up of society.’ . . . Mr. Sharma’s book is a fine guide to the great emerging market boom and bust.” (The Economist)

“Compelling. . . a success. . . . The local insight adds color, while the data reassures us that his analysis is underpinned by more than a series of conversations with taxi drivers. . . . Much more than an investment primer. The issues he deals with, from growth to inequality, are of much broader interest. . . .This does not necessarily mean he will be right ―but it does mean his projections are more easily testable. . . .Sharma’s book provides a good guide for working out what will come next.” (Duncan Weldon - Prospect magazine)

“A vital guide to the new economic order. . . . Sharma has been one of the prescient seers of the Chinese debt crisis.” (Rana Foroohar - Time Magazine)

“If you have been wondering what’s happening to the world―why for example has England voted to commit economic suicide by leaving the European Union?. . . . The Americans have voted for Donald Trump. . . Donald Trump? What’s going on? Is there a rightwing, anti-immigrant backlash, or is it more complex? In fact much of what is happening is following a pattern, a pattern of global trends that this book has in great detail and mastery documented. . . . An amazing read, I learned a lot from it, and its out-of-the-box thinking.” (Prannoy Roy, Indian TV news anchor and executive co-chair of NDTV group)

“The book is so lively and wandering that it is possible to miss the 10 rules and enjoy it just as a record of Sharma’s learning them.” (The Indian Express)

“The most interesting question of all time is why countries are poor. . . . The Rise and Fall of Nations is a wonderful attempt to answer that question by asking 10 questions. . . . This book is a wonderful way to travel the world, understand the issues countries should care about.” (Manish Sabharwal - India Today)

Praise for Ruchir Sharma and Breakout Nations

One of Bloomberg’s 50 Most Influential People of 2015 and Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers of 2012.

“The best book on global economic trends I’ve read in a while.”―Fareed Zakaria

“Sharma’s wealth of knowledge … and ample experience on the ground are strong foundations for his exploration of what makes economies break out, or break down.”― Reuters

“For sheer readability and insight on the developing world drama, I dare say you won't find a better choice.”― Wall Street Journal

“Combines keen on-the-ground reporting and economic and investment analysis with lively, lucid prose.”― Forbes

“Smart geoeconomic insights.”― Foreign Policy

“Prescient.”―Washington Post

“I love this book. It really snuck up on me. It will sneak up on you too.”―Tom Keene, Bloomberg TV

The 21st Century Mobius
By Dilbert
As one of Mr. Sharma's competitors (an institutional EM manager), I found his latest book to be spot on and immensely readable. He breaks down his rules of thumb for emerging market investing into simple language with many practical examples from his own experience. His book is similar to some of Mark Mobius' books, but without the endless self promotion that made Mobius' books difficult to read. I think anyone from a total investing novice to sophisticated institutional investor could pick this book up and learn something new.

Two of Sharma's most important points were the "Circle of Life" and "Kiss of Debt" chapters. He very correctly points out that politicians who start out on a promising, reform driven path -- such as Putin in Russia, Edrogan in Turkey, and even Mugabe in Zimbabwe -- tend to become corrupt and terrible for economic growth after ten years. What's great now often turns rotten over the long term; this is a theme which recurs in his book.

The Kiss of Debt chapter is more relevant in the post-financial crisis environment. While it seems common sense, Sharma's research shows that countries in which debt grows at rates greatly exceeding GDP growth tend to experience a period of very low growth in subsequent years. The most pertinent example today: China. However, there are some other less-recognized examples including Turkey.

Sharma does a great job of integrating historical examples, statistics, and his own personal ground-level observations into a relatively succinct book. This was a great sequel to his Breakout Nations book and I hope he continues to publish his thoughts.

A practical guide to understanding the economies of the world.
By Graham M. Flower
I read books very much along this line partly because I am just interested in world comparisons and partly because I work in a high tech business where the supply lines are spread over numerous countries. I work in a technology group with 22 engineers and scientists and I'm the only one born in the USA and my colleagues often share some of their observations on regions of the world.

That said, I've read several books of a similar genre and this is the best of them. Mr Sharma shares lots of interesting facts with us which you can get a good sense of from the review by Mr Loyd E.

The book has 11 chapters. Each of the first 10 discusses a subject of analysis that he performs on the various countries and he basically maps out how he thinks about each of these and gives some examples. The methods are not difficult to understand and are very full of fairly practical wisdom. The 11th chapter he basically summarizes his feeling about the prospects of various countries over the next 5 years. He is careful to note that he's only making projections for the next 5 years or so as things can change based upon world developments or leadership changes.

Although Ruchir's focus is on emerging market countries there are plenty of statements made relating to G7 or G20 countries. You get a pretty good feeling for which areas of the world are likely to make real economic progress and which ones are likely to slip.

Seeking to Time the Constant Boom and Bust of Economies
By bill greene
There are many strong points in this book and it is well worth reading for those interested in what makes a nation prosper. Mr. Sharma, an investment analyst on Wall Street, focuses on the short-term swings in the many world’s economies, with the objective of timing his firm’s investment in nations that are about to Rise and a timely dis-investment when they are about to Fall. Thus, his idea of Rise and Fall is not the historian’s which looks at long-term growth over hundreds of years. His analysis is centered on the fundamental lack of permanency of most nation’s economies.

The author relates a fascinating story, covering a hundred or more nations, over the last 50 years, and how almost all the countries have been buffeted by repeated and violent booms and busts, with little persistent increases in well-being--since 1970 there have been five worldwide recessions, he reports, and they have all started in the United States, and they have decimated the fortunes of most of the world’s poorer nations.
The author points a finger at the “easy money pouring out of Western banks” as fuel adding to a rapid expansion and a resulting bust. He describes how the lack of financial regulation on banks and the 2008 mortgage/financial melt-down on Wall Street ended the period of rapid worldwide growth and reversed the fortunes of all emerging economies. In a time when everyone wants to aid the Third World countries, it is useful to reflect on how the speculative and corrupt practices on Wall Street undid all the good that may have come from the foreign aid and assistance given to the undeveloped nations. Sharma explains, that if the boom had been moderated, and the bust avoided, the average incomes of the emerging nations would have soon caught up with those of the rich nations.

The ten factors that the author relies on to identify a growing economy are: Whether the size of the workforce is increasing; Is the geography favorable; Are there significant investment in factories; The amount of inflation; The Level of Debt; The number and nature of billionaires and corruption; whether the currency value is high or low; the degree of support vs interference by the government; the degree of income inequality; and the persistence of growth. Many of these factors are the same as measured each year by the various “Indices of Economic Freedom” published by the Heritage Society and the Fraser Institute. Thus, Sharma supports the conservative philosophy that a nation’s is largely dependent on a growing workforce, moderate debt, low inflation, minimal government regulation, and avoidance of high inequality. He lists the very few “miracle economies” that have managed to offer these supports over an extended period and thereby gain decades of sustained growth: Korea, Taiwan, China, and Singapore. The others usually fall victim to swings between reform and populism with its excess regulation, wild spending, low investment, and corruption. Indeed, America itself is becoming more subject to such destructive tendencies..

Sharma’s earlier book, “Break out Nations,” is very similar to this one, and also indicates that to be successful, a nation must maintain order, minimize debt, minimize corruption, balance the budget, and go easy on burdensome regulations that suppress business activity. A weakness in both books is that there is little attention given to the importance of the nature and attitude of a people or their culture. For an interesting example of how culture and the composition of a population impacts economic success, I recommend “Start-up Nation, The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle” by Damon Senor and Saul Singer. Sharma mentions Israel in only two small paragraphs, acknowledging their transformation into a technical powerhouse over the last 40 years, but with no discussion of why that happened and persisted so long. It is likely that some populations and cultures are less prone to swing into orgies of populism and the uncontrolled spending that creates the boom and bust scenarios which preclude extended rises in prosperity.
The book provides much raw data on demographic trends and stresses the need for population growth. With birth rates down in most of the established economies, he seems to favor immigration as the answer but makes no mention of good vs bad immigration. There is no reference to immigration policies such as used in Norway, Israel, and Switzerland that restrict admission to desirable merit-based applicants. Similarly, the author stresses the need for a growing workforce but pays scant attention to the percentage of people in the workforce. The shortage of workers is not just caused by birth rates, but also by the number of people dropping out of the workforce. Last month, the Congressional Budget Office projected that the American labor force participation rate will decline from about 63 percent in 2017 to around 58 percent in 2046. The report indicates that if the participation rate is 61 percent in 2046, the resulting higher gross domestic product would lead to more revenues, higher interest rates, smaller budget deficits, and less federal debt. But if the participation rate drops to 55 percent in 2046, the resulting slower economic growth would create larger budget deficits and more debt. Consideration of these variables, and their causes, would have helped provide useful solutions to our economic problems.

All Creatures Great and Small, by James Herriot

The classic multimillion copy bestseller

Delve into the magical, unforgettable world of James Herriot, the world's most beloved veterinarian, and his menagerie of heartwarming, funny, and tragic animal patients.

For over forty years, generations of readers have thrilled to Herriot's marvelous tales, deep love of life, and extraordinary storytelling abilities. For decades, Herriot roamed the remote, beautiful Yorkshire Dales, treating every patient that came his way from smallest to largest, and observing animals and humans alike with his keen, loving eye.

In All Creatures Great and Small, we meet the young Herriot as he takes up his calling and discovers that the realities of veterinary practice in rural Yorkshire are very different from the sterile setting of veterinary school. Some visits are heart-wrenchingly difficult, such as one to an old man in the village whose very ill dog is his only friend and companion, some are lighthearted and fun, such as Herriot's periodic visits to the overfed and pampered Pekinese Tricki Woo who throws parties and has his own stationery, and yet others are inspirational and enlightening, such as Herriot's recollections of poor farmers who will scrape their meager earnings together to be able to get proper care for their working animals. From seeing to his patients in the depths of winter on the remotest homesteads to dealing with uncooperative owners and critically ill animals, Herriot discovers the wondrous variety and never-ending challenges of veterinary practice as his humor, compassion, and love of the animal world shine forth.

James Herriot's memoirs have sold 80 million copies worldwide, and continue to delight and entertain readers of all ages.

About the Author

JAMES HERRIOT was a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England for over half a century until his death in 1995. His bestselling memoirs include All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire.

All Creatures Great and Small
By bookworm
I want to warn all Herriot devotees that in buying the omnibus editions they are NOT getting all the stories! For example in Jim's courtship of Helen, the episode of the Daffodil Ball is omitted. Let me demonstrate. 'In Let Sleeping Vets Lie' chapter twenty three begins:

"After the night of the Daffodil Ball I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening."

However in the omnibus edition we have:

"After the night at the cinema with Helen I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening"

How dare they do this? I am extremely annoyed to have spent my money on these omnibus editions. I will now have to go to all lengths to get the original books which Amazon will not ship to New Zealand.

The American publishers think they know better than James Herriot how his stories should unfold. They are wrong.

I recommend this delightful and gentle storytelling of a veterinarian's career in the English countryside. Was such a charming read. Can't tell you how disappointed I was when the end of the book showed itself. I missed seeing the PBS television version many years ago, however, the movie in my head was ever so entertaining! Yes, read it!

Kant and Cosmopolitanism: The Philosophical Ideal of World Citizenship, by Pauline Kleingeld

This is the first comprehensive account of Kant's cosmopolitanism, highlighting its moral, political, legal, economic, cultural and psychological aspects. Contrasting Kant's views with those of his German contemporaries and relating them to current debates, Pauline Kleingeld sheds new light on texts that have been hitherto neglected or underestimated. In clear and carefully argued discussions, she shows that Kant's philosophical cosmopolitanism underwent a radical transformation in the mid 1790s and that the resulting theory is philosophically stronger than is usually thought. Using the work of figures such as Fichte, Cloots, Forster, Hegewisch, Wieland and Novalis, Kleingeld analyses Kant's arguments regarding the relationship between cosmopolitanism and patriotism, the importance of states, the ideal of an international federation, cultural pluralism, race, global economic justice and the psychological feasibility of the cosmopolitan ideal. In doing so, she reveals a broad spectrum of positions in cosmopolitan theory that are relevant to current discussions of cosmopolitanism.

Review
"In 200 pages, readers get an overview of the importance of German cosmopolitan thought for international relations, which is in itself an impressive accomplishment. Despite the numerous contemporary works on multiculturalism, anyone interested in the question of global governance in a pluralist world will find Kleingeld's book an indispensable starting point ... Highly recommended ..."
R. G. Schoellhammer, Choice

"In this careful and insightful book, Pauline Kleingeld reconstructs Kant's cosmopolitanism, placing him in dialogue with historical contemporaries (including Christoph Wieland, Anacharsis Cloots, Georg Forster, Dietrich Hegewisch, and Novalis), and with several present-day thinkers (John Rawls, Jrgen Habermas, and Thomas Pogge). The result is an extremely clear and engaging work, one that manages to add something both to our understanding of Kant and to our understanding of what a 'cosmopolitan' political theory should look like today ... This book deserves a wide audience for its fine reconstruction of Kant's views on international justice."
Anna Stilz, Social Theory and Practice

About the Author
Pauline Kleingeld is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. She is the author of Fortschritt und Vernunft: Zur Geschichtsphilosophie Kants (1995) and the editor of Immanuel Kant, 'Toward Perpetual Peace' and Other Writings on Politics, Peace, and History (2006).

Who Was Ferdinand Magellan? (Who Was...?), by S. A. Kramer

When Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain in 1519, he believed he could get to the Spice Islands by sailing west through or around the New World. He was right, but what he didn't know was that the treacherous voyage would take him three years and cost him his life. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate Magellan's life and voyage, with sidebars and a time line that enhance readers' understanding of the period.

Who Was Ferdinand Magellan?

Who Was Ferdinand Magellan?

Who Was Ferdinand Magellan?

Imagine a time when no one was sure the Earth was round … when people believed they’d topple over the edge if they sailed too far from home. Imagine a time when most people didn’t know there was a Pacific Ocean. Go back five hundred years, when whole continents were still undiscovered, when people thought the Earth was tiny and that monsters swam through its waters. Yet one man decided to sail his ship through unknown seas and discover what was out there.

He was not the first to make such a perilous voyage. But he went farther and stayed away longer than anyone had before. Because of his brains and courage, he is known for being the first man to circumnavigate—sail around—the globe.

Who was he?

Ferdinand Magellan.

Chapter 1
The Boy Becomes a Man

Sometime around 1480 in Portugal, a boy named Ferdinand was born to the Magellan family. The Magellans were of noble blood, but they had little money or power. They owned a farm far from the sea. This was where Ferdinand, the youngest of three children, grew up. Their house wasn’t fancy: The family lived on the top floor and their cows, goats, sheep, and chickens lived on the bottom.

Another Great "Who Was" Book
By Amazon Customer
My 8-year-old history buff loves all of the "Who Was" Books. This is what he wrote about this one:

Ferdinand Magellan sailed around the world. Uh kind of. Well let's say his crew sailed around the world. You see he went to the Philippines. He died. I am not going to tell you the details. His ship sailed around the world. He was Portuguese. I love this book.

New York Times Bestseller

What happens when you eat an apple? The answer is vastly more complex than you imagine.

Every apple contains thousands of antioxidants whose names, beyond a few like vitamin C, are unfamiliar to us, and each of these powerful chemicals has the potential to play an important role in supporting our health. They impact thousands upon thousands of metabolic reactions inside the human body. But calculating the specific influence of each of these chemicals isn’t nearly sufficient to explain the effect of the apple as a whole. Because almost every chemical can affect every other chemical, there is an almost infinite number of possible biological consequences.

And that’s just from an apple.

Nutritional science, long stuck in a reductionist mindset, is at the cusp of a revolution. The traditional “gold standard” of nutrition research has been to study one chemical at a time in an attempt to determine its particular impact on the human body. These sorts of studies are helpful to food companies trying to prove there is a chemical in milk or pre-packaged dinners that is “good” for us, but they provide little insight into the complexity of what actually happens in our bodies or how those chemicals contribute to our health.

In The China Study, T. Colin Campbell (alongside his son, Thomas M. Campbell) revolutionized the way we think about our food with the evidence that a whole food, plant-based diet is the healthiest way to eat. Now, in Whole, he explains the science behind that evidence, the ways our current scientific paradigm ignores the fascinating complexity of the human body, and why, if we have such overwhelming evidence that everything we think we know about nutrition is wrong, our eating habits haven’t changed.

Whole is an eye-opening, paradigm-changing journey through cutting-edge thinking on nutrition, a scientific tour de force with powerful implications for our health and for our world.

From Publishers Weekly
Campbell's follow-up to his best-selling The China Study is more of the same, in the best way. He continues his quest to convince people that "the ideal human diet looks like this: Consumer plant-based foods in forms as close to their natural state as possible...eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and whole grains." The entirety of the book is a passionate and convincing case for that ideal diet. Campbell has not written a book of diet tips, or even provided recipes. In fact, at times the book delves so deeply into scientific process— for example, explaining how cancer develops or how metabolism works—that many may find themselves having to read slowly to understand his point. Yet he makes the case that Americans are too prone to take pills to solve health issues (and doctors too prone to prescribe them) as a result of "reductionist thinking". His years of scientific study and calm, measured tone are highly convincing, making a firm case that changing one's diet is the best way to assure good health. Readers will be inclined to put down their processed food snacks once they read what could be a life-changer of a book. (May)

Review
''After reading The China Study and drastically changing my diet toward the more whole food, plant-based diet recommended by Dr. Campbell, my career numbers shot up when they were supposed to be declining. What You'll Learn in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition
By Allen Scott
"History is a race between education and catastrophe" -HG Wells, quoted in Whole.

As T. Colin Campbell writes, Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition is built on two basic insights: "First, nutrition is the master key to human health. Second, what most of us think of as proper nutrition--isn't." While for many (though, alas, still the minority) this isn't news, showing why this is the case with a carefully crafted, well-researched thoroughness is what makes this a signature T. Colin Campbell book. As anyone who has read The China Study knows, this MIT-trained, 50-plus year veteran of nutritional research and politics packs a crisp and well-trained punch. His power comes from his clarity of expression and the thoroughness of his research. Campbell builds his thesis with tight reasoning, backed by solid research that considers the big picture. That's why, even if you feel like you don't need convincing, it's great to have the data and clear rationale beyond what may feel intuitive to you; that is, that a whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest diet there is and our current nutritional-medical complex is harming millions and millions by disguising that nutritional fact (did you know that pharmaceutical companies spend considerably more on political lobbying than defense contractors?).

If you've read The China Study, Campbell's important bestseller, you'll be familiar with themes in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. But the focus is different. As Campbell writes, "The China Study focused on the evidence that tells us the whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest human diet. Whole focuses on why it's been so hard to bring that evidence to light -- and on what still needs to happen for real change to take place."

Much of the book lies in the difference between reductionism and holism. "If you are a reductionist," writes Campbell (p. 49), "you believe that everything in the world can be understood if you understand all its component parts. A wholist, on the other hand, believes that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. That's it: the entire debate in a nutshell." Much of the confusion the public has about the basic healthy way to eat is based on small studies that highlight a little something, but miss the bigger picture. Campbell has the research experience and brain power to tie it all together.

If there is one issue I have with the book, it is that Campbell doesn't really look at our individual tendency to rationalize and how that dovetails with the confusion created by the food and medical industries. That is, while it's true that a plethora of confusing and overwhelming information makes it difficult to hear loud and clear the truth about a whole foods plant-based diet, even many who are convinced it is the best way to eat, don't end up eating that way. Why? Because sugar, fat, meat, and junk food taste yummy (at least they do until you break the habit/s, and then they usually taste too much). In fact, they taste so good that most people end up kinda, sorta downplaying the consequence of indulging and are only too happy (unconsciously) to be bolstered by noisy and confusing nutritional headlines. Or, to twist the classic expression a bit: "the spirit is weak because the flesh is willing." For that reason, this is an important book: it helps bolster the resolve of anyone who kind of knows a whole foods approach is the way to go. And for those that don't, this book is a clear and easy to read education. This is definitely an valuable book that I hope is widely read.

Explains why The China Study is not mainstream
By GskFn
The gist of T. Colin Campbell's new book, Whole, is this. After publishing his radical landmark The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health in 2005, let's suppose what he reported there is true. Eight years later, why hasn't that information and perspective broken through to more widespread awareness? Why hasn't your doctor or dietitian told you about it, or heard of it, or given it serious consideration? Why haven't school lunches changed across the board? Whole gives answers.

Three p-words permeate Campbell's thesis here: profits, power, and paradigms. Power and profits drive the big businesses of livestock and processed food, Campbell argues. For elaboration on how the processed food industry influences people's eating habits against public health while in pursuit of sales and profits, I recommend Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (2013) or The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (2009). More controversially perhaps, Campbell also argues that profit motives fuel the chase for pills, patents, and procedures in "health care" or as Campbell calls it, the "disease care" industries of pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and medical practitioners. Registered dietitians may be compromised too, as their influential trade association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, receives major funding from the junk food business including Coca-Cola, Hershey, PepsiCo, Mars, and Unilever (that covers several major ice cream brands), as well as the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the National Dairy Council, among others. (p. 271) The food and health care industries also buy power and influence by funding, in part, the careers of politicians, food regulators, and media outlets (including both popular media and some scientific journals) (p. 181-262). That's a big argument, and Campbell states it earnestly. He looks at, "all the political maneuvering and financial pressure...a version of reality shaped more by the profit agendas of Big Pharma, supplement makers, hospitals, surgeons, and suppliers of processed food and industrial meat and dairy than the truth." (p. 261)

But what about science? Don't the health sciences uphold an objective space where research like Campbell's can get a proper hearing among fair-minded truth seekers? Here Campbell covers a lot of ground. Whole unpacks Campbell's frustration with food sciences that drive for answers in small elements of biochemistry, often dismissing or putting up stiff resistance to studies at the level of major dietary patterns, lifestyles, and community-level differences in health outcomes (p. 45-164). Campbell knows from personal experience. He has contributed to food science both at the minute level of biochemistry, and also at the lifestyle and community levels like a medical sociologist would do, as The China Study makes clear.

Campbell's account in Whole may serve as vivid material for science studies. This is a field where sociologists and philosophers grapple with questions of how human foibles, careerism, and powerful interests sometimes distort and inhibit the advancement of science, and how new theories occasionally burst through to scientific acceptance despite formidable resistance. Campbell deploys the concept of scientific "paradigms" in food studies. Scientists cluster their investigations and share basic assumptions within a broad current of thought, or paradigm, the thinking goes, for as long as the prevailing paradigm seems productive, until one day the paradigm runs out of answers and gives way to challengers. In our time, Campbell suggests, the paradigm in nutrition is that animal foods are healthy sources of key nutrients that call for microbiological research; and the paradigm in medicine is that disease is to be cured through pills and procedures that call for biochemistry in pharmaceuticals, biotechnological engineering, and surgical protocols. The notion that medical and nutritional sciences, or any science, organizes into theoretical paradigms that hold sway during periods of "normal science" springs from Thomas Kuhn's launching pad for the field of science studies, first published in 1962, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions: 50th Anniversary Edition. T. Colin Campbell goes further, intimating that scientific grant makers should promote a more appropriate distribution of financial resources in health-related studies, in order to breed a research environment that would admit a variety of approaches, even if they contradict the main thrust (p. 214-217). His thinking comports well with some recent, socially minded philosophers of science, especially Miriam Solomon's excellent brief, Social Empiricism (Bradford Books) (2001).

If you haven't read The China Study, I would recommend that first (and The China Study may be all you want or need). The China Study spells out the many health benefits of whole foods, plant-based eating in Campbell's view; and what is the research that brought him to believe that; and what's wrong with animal foods. Or, for a captivating show of it on your tv screen, you can see T. Colin Campbell speaking prominently in the outstanding documentary film, Forks Over Knives.

If you want to know how exactly to go about eating a whole foods plant-based diet, then Whole is not the place to turn. But I can recommend some very good books for that: The Starch Solution: Eat the Foods You Love, Regain Your Health, and Lose the Weight for Good!, Forks Over Knives - The Cookbook: Over 300 Recipes for Plant-Based Eating All Through the Year, and Everyday Happy Herbivore: Over 175 Quick-and-Easy Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes. Isa Chandra Moskowitz also comes pretty close to Campbell's way of eating in the reduced-fat version of her super-tasty chef's recipes (though she adds very small quantities of oil that you can cut out if you want to stay true to Campbell's way) -- in Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes.

If you're curious and you want to come to grips with the clash in food science between Campbell's minority viewpoint and mainstream theories, then you've come to the right book. Further, if you'd like to hold your own in discussions with people who may want to know how you can be so confident as you shrug off the mainstream opposition and lean into the radical health promise of whole-foods plant-based eating, read this. If you simply want to know why whole foods, plant-based eating has not become more widely accepted, then Whole is a very fine book for you. Thank you, T. Colin Campbell for turning it out.

Another great book from Dr. Campbell
By Stella Blackson
I loved the China Study. Now this just adds to it, explaining the reductionist thinking that passes for research nowadays. I have been plant-based for many years. unfortunately, it has been tough to convert my family to this way of eating.
I feel so healthy and good on this diet. At my age, (59) my mother started on high blood pressure medication. When I gave blood recently, mine was 108/80.
It is a tough sell for the people I know. This book highlights how hard it is to change age-old thinking. (Especially when there's money involved). The only person in my family who read the China Study, my daughter, eats healthily like I do. The rest of them won't read it. (Heads in the sand?)
Thank you, Dr. Campbell, for another great book.
