Finally someone gets it right!!

This must certainly be the definitive edition/book collection of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon comic strip. It's reproduced along with the original Jungle Jim topper. You have already heard about the book's huge size. Now what about the quality inside? Contrary to what one reviewer said, complaining about the quality, please bear in mind that for this volume they scanned the original newspaper Sunday pages were the strip was printed. Those of you expecting to see a book containing scans from Alex Raymond's original art can keep on dreaming, as that will never be possible (most of the original art is already lost or scattered all over the world and in the hands of art collectors and fans). Sure, there are a couple of imperfections due to the printing process of the time (the mid-thirties), but I've compared this book with the volumes Kitchen Sink put out in the late eighties and/or early nineties (which by the way, many fans believe to be the definitive version, quality-wise), and this version by IDW is far superior. I don't know what Sunday newspapers they used, but they certainly got hold of the best. You can really see Raymond's bold brush strokes come through very clearly and uncluttered, and the color is constantly subdued, clear and not garish or murky at all, as opposed to that of the Kitchen Sink book again (which at the time, I never thought could be topped). Also, for those of you who might believe the artwork isn't big enough, it's actually larger than those of the previous other books published in America or elsewhere. Though I must say that I never got the version published by Checker, as they had apparently used the same source as Kitchen Sink. Anyone out there who has those books might want to compare them with this one by IDW also.

This book is printed on heavy stock mat paper, to avoid the glare you get from reading on a more glossy and shiny paper. Plus, as I said before, you get the Jungle Jim topper, which has rarely been reprinted and/or collected in book-form before.

By the way, Titan is planning on reprinting the Flash Gordon strip as well. Well, they've got a tough book to beat. This certainly will remain the definitive version of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. I can hardly wonder how it can be topped or surpassed, this side of getting hold of the original artwork, which is an impossibility. And since this version already surpasses by far the one by Kitchen Sink, I believe it will remain the definitive one.

If you're a fan of Alex Raymond and Flash Gordon, this is the book to BUY!!! And remember, you're getting Jungle Jim as well for the same price. If that isn't the comic strip deal of the century, I don't know what is.

Now, IDW, about that other strip Alex Raymond drew... you know, the one Dashiell Hammett wrote, what was it? Secret agent something or another? How about publishing it in the near future as well. I missed the version Kitchen Sink put out way back, and only have a French edition...

Look at the size of that thing!!!

Just received my copy of "Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim" Vol. 1. Wow. Now this is a book that makes an impression. It is without question the largest comic strip reprint volume I've ever seen (considerably larger than Fantagraphic's current generously sized - and lovely - "Prince Valiant" series and their even larger than those "Captain Easy" volumes). There's not a lot I can really say about Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon that you don't already know. If you're looking at this item or reading this review, I'm sure you don't have to be sold on Flash. You already want it. At approximately 16 x 12, these Flash Gordon pages are printed at or near the size readers would have seen them on first publication. AND you get the pages as they've never been reprinted with the "Jungle Jim" strips at the top of the page. Size aside, the entire book is what you would expect of a quality IDW/LAC production (although I can already hear some getting ready to complain that the strips are printed too small!). Quality paper, sharp reproduction and vivid colors, this probably as good as Flash Gordon (and Jungle Jim) ever looked. And these Sunday pages from 1934 - 1936 are still early Alex Raymond before his art really begins to soar. The best is yet to come. I can't wait for the remaining three volumes in the series, but I may have to build and extra room onto the house just to have some place to put them!

Definitive edition? Yes, but.

Reviewers have been calling the IDW edition of Flash Gordon the "definitive edition." They may be right, but this is not a black and white proposition. Kitchen Sink can still be considered for that claim.

First as far as strip sizes, prior to the strip going to the full page format, the IDW reprint strips are slightly bigger (less than 1/4 inch) than the Kitchen Sink Edition. Almost unnoticeable. Both editions still reprint those early Sunday strips in too small a size. However, when they go to the full page format, the Kitchen Sink edition is significantly bigger than the IDW -like 1/3 bigger. However, Kitchen Sink splits each page into 2 landscape pages. I prefer the original full newspaper page format. In the later strips, non full-page format. IDW comes out ahead.

Sharpness of reproduction. Kitchen Sink's reproductions are arguably better than IDW, quite sharp and brightly colored, and the effect is enhanced by their using glossy paper, similar to printing a photo on photographic paper rather than on matte paper. However, I think the matte effect is closer to the original newspaper version.

Other IDW plusses: IDW's reprinting of Jungle Jim at the top of each page. Jungle Jim previously was only available in a Pacific Comics edition- some 12-16 large landscape pages- $15.00 each volume and some 35-40 volumes. Quite costly. IDW's inclusion restores the original Sunday page format and gives the readers an excellent bonus. Also the miscellaneous features at the top of some Sunday pages (Flash Gordon, Dale Arden in various space fashions, etc ) are a nice touch.

Overall then, IDW comes out ahead. And the book truly is a work of art. But the Kitchen Sink series is still quite good.

He has extensive consulting experience in the mining industry, particularly in the application of large drives.Professor Rodriguez’ research group was recoginized as one of the two Centers of Excellence in Engineering in Chile from 2005 to 2008. He has directed more than 40 R&D projects in the field of industrial electronics, and his main research interests include multilevel inverters, new converter topologies, control of power converters and adjustable-speed drives. He has co-authored more than 250 journal and conference papers and contributed one book chapter. Since 2002 he has been active associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. He received the Best Paper Award from the former in 2007.

Patricio Cort�s, Universidad T�cnica Federico Santa Mar�a, Chile Dr Cortes joined the Electronics Engineering Department UTFSM in 2003, where he is currently Research Associate. His main research interests include power electronics, adjustable speed drives and predictive control. About the Author
David C. Funder is Distinguished Professor of Psychology and former chair of the department at the University of California, Riverside. Winner of the 2009 Jack Block Award for Distinguished Research in Personality, he is a former editor of the Journal of Research in Personality, and a past president of the Association for Research in Personality as well as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is best known for his research on personality judgment and has also published research on delay of gratification, attribution theory, the longitudinal course of personality development, and the psychological assessment of situations. He has taught personality psychology to undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College, Harvard University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and continues to teach the course every year at the University of California, Riverside.

this book is as good as it gets

Used this for a large personality class in Winter 2013. I think the book is as good or better than anything else out there. I searched for a good text for my upper division university students, and chose this one rather than the one I used last year that studied theorists and their stories. I decided it is best to use an overview book because personality is getting so complex, it is perhaps the most complex topic in psychology. I also teach abnormal psychology and find the personality course more complex, because abnormal psych can rely on the DSM-IV as a teaching paradigm. There is not central paradigm for teaching personality, so it's a complex topic. The author takes so many different views on each topic that it can be challenging reading. Yet that is the gift he gives in this book -- that he is ethical and fair. He doesn't state opinions that are not true, not even half-truths. He gives as many possible views on personality as possible and does not get on the psychological/empirical high-horse and pretend personality research is clear. For example in the chapter on culture and personality, he doesn't claim that culture determines personality in any specific ways, which would be tempting to do if an author was in to oversimplification. Rather, he shows how it's complex and that is the beauty of personality. This is advanced scholarly learning--to hold back and not get to the point in a simplistic way, because getting to the point would be inaccurate. As a teacher I balanced the text with lecture information that included some fun and solid "points" and take-away learning, so the students had something solid to hang on to. In that way I think the students had a balanced class experience, and the reviews were good. Students who actually read the book were well-informed by the end of the quarter and could talk intelligently about personality.
I held back one star, because I do think this book needed more animation, pictures, images. I understand he took these out, but it does lack visual stimulation. But again, the writing is thorough. And --don't forget, this book is $60 cheaper than other books with identical information perhaps presented less well. Choosing texts that not inflated in terms of price is important, so I am glad they sell this book at a reasonable price. Also this book is used at so many universities, it's not hard to resale this book.

Pretty Good Intro to Personality Psych

I had to buy this for my online Personality Psychology and I found this book to be very enjoyable. The chapters are long and it does have a lot of examples with additions of the author's experiences/opinions. Sometimes it could be summarized better but the end of the chapter summaries do a good job without losing too much. I feel I am learning a lot from this book and am doing very well in the class so I would say the book is pretty good. Its not boring or dry but If you dislike a relaxed feel you might not like this book because the author does talk to you a bit.

"Intrinsically irrational" is how Jon Krakauer characterizes the compulsion to climb Mount Everest in his audiobook Into Thin Air. The highly publicized fates of the May 1996 Everest expeditions, including the tragic loss of 12 lives, seem to bear out Krakauer's statement. Listening to Krakauer read his own account of the events in this unabridged version adds a uniquely intimate and thought-provoking dimension to the tragedy. Although Krakauer reads his account with journalistic professionalism, it's impossible to forget that you are listening to someone unburdening himself of a great weight, an unburdening that sometimes nearly approaches a confession.

Since the 1980s, more and more "marginally qualified dreamers" have attempted the ascent of Everest, as guided commercial expeditions have dangled the possibility of reaching the roof of the world in front of anyone wealthy enough to pay for the privilege. In 1996, Outside magazine asked Krakauer, a frequent contributor, to write a piece on the commercialization of Everest, and Krakauer signed on as a member of New Zealander Rob Hall's expedition. The disastrous outcome of the 1996 expedition forced Krakauer to write a very different article.

Those who read Krakauer's book may wonder whether the audiobook can possibly shed more light on the unfortunate events. It does. Krakauer's chronicle is chilling and horrifying. He recounts with excruciating detail the physical and mental cost of such a climb. Even under the best of circumstances, each step up the ice-clad mountain is monumentally exhausting, and the oxygen-deprived brain loses the ability to make reliable judgements. And on May 10, 1996, when Hall's expedition and several others made their summit assault, the conditions were far from ideal. The mountain was so "crowded" that climbers had to wait their turn near the summit while their bottled oxygen dwindled by the minute. By afternoon a blinding hurricane-force storm had stranded a number of climbers on the highest, most exposed reaches of the mountain.

By writing and reading Into Thin Air, Krakauer may have hoped to exorcise some of his own demons and lay to rest some of the painful questions that still surround the event. He takes great pains to provide a balanced picture of the people and events he witnessed and gives due credit to the tireless and dedicated Sherpas. He also avoids blasting easy targets such as Sandy Pittman, the wealthy socialite who brought an espresso maker along on the expedition. Krakauer's highly personal inquiry into the catastrophe provides a great deal of insight into what went wrong. But for Krakauer himself, further interviews and investigations only lead him to the conclusion that his perceived failures were directly responsible for a fellow climber's death. Clearly, Krakauer remains haunted by the disaster, and although he relates a number of incidents in which he acted selflessly and even heroically, he seems unable to view those instances objectively. In the end, despite his evenhanded and even generous assessment of others' actions, he reserves a full measure of vitriol for himself. (Running time: 467 minutes; six tapes)

A Classic Tale

I first read "Into Thin Air" right after it was first published five years ago. It haunted me at the time, and it continues to do so today. By now, the story has been told so many times and by so many different people that it hard to remember that Krakauer's original account is the one that made it famous to begin with. Were it not for his incredible abilities as a storyteller, it is doubtful that anyone outside the world of mountaineering would remember what happened at the peak of Everest in that fateful May of 1996.
Krakauer's account is so compelling because it reads like a book length confession, which it is in a sense. The author worked through his very considerable feelings of survivor's guilt in the book's pages. His descriptions and not inconsiderable opinions have become legendary. For example, how many people read of AOL Chairman Robert Pittman's recent outster from the company and remembered him as the husband of Sandra Hill Pittman, who personified the rich amature climber who buys their way to the top of the world's tallest peak and who has no business being there? Krakauer's descriptions of Mrs. Pittman on the mountain are an example of his simple but devastating observations.
Krakauer's highly readable prose make the book read like fiction, probably another reason why it was so popular. He signed on for the Everest climb intending to write a standard mountaineering magazine article. That he chose the fateful May 1996 climb is simply a rare case of someone being at the wrong place at precisely the right time. Though it caused him plenty of personal torment, it also allowed him to write a story for the ages.
Overall, "Into Thin Air" fantastic storytelling make it one of the best non-fiction books published in the last decade or so.

Even if you already know the story of the deadly Mt. Everest expeditions of 1996, you will appreciate Jon Krakauer's own first person account of the Adventure Consultants and the Mountain Madness groups. Both of these expeditions were led by well-seasoned Everest climbers---Rob Hall from New Zealand and Scott Fischer from the States--and had the aid of expert guides, Sherpas from Nepal and "outsiders". But we soon find that even these experienced people are not immune from the human frailties of greed, denial and self-serving. Those Achilles' heels will cause both expeditions to completely fall apart. At the same time, human error combined with the unforgiving terrors of high altitude climbing sets the scene for heroism in many of the climbers and crew.
Krakauer, a journalist who signed on with Hall's expedition to do a story for Outside magazine, doesn't disappoint as weaver of a tale. I took the book everywhere with me while reading it, always eager to find out what would happen next.
If a book that explores deftly our desire to reach an unreachable summit appeals to you....especially when that book does not shy away from the tragedy caused when the desire to reach it undoes common sense and humanity....I highly recommend "Into Thin Air."

How to tell the truth at 29,000 feet

By and large, the negative reviews posted here have little to do with the quality of this book and almost everything to do with the presumed character of the writer, Jon Krakauer. Similarly, those who dislike Krakauer's Into the Wild tend to focus their judgment of the book's worth on their own feelings regarding the essay's subject, Christopher McCandless, the young man who traveled the Western United States and Mexico for two years before perishing in Alaska. I read Krakauer differently. I am not interested in Krakauer's liberal politics, his emotional instability, and variable maturity. I am not interested in whether he portrays the absolute truth in his account of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster for the simple fact that I don't believe the truth can be told. Writing is a very poor substitute for a frostbitten finger or a hypoxic head. All we have is Krakauer's writing, so let's look at what he does as a writer.

Krakauer is a sensationalist journalist, and since he reports on dangerous and near-death experiences regularly, he really can't help being grandiose and spectacular. The subject of his writing demands that he ratchet up the emotional power of his style and word choice. And let's be honest--don't we, as readers, demand it of him as well? Don't we want a voyeuristic and graphic account, where the size, the shape, and the smell of death seem to lift from the pages? Who wants to read about a mountain climbing disaster sans the emotion and the ego it takes to put one's self unnecessarily into such perilous situations?

Perhaps some readers want a quiet truth about what happened on the mountain, but this is to ask the impossible since every climber is guaranteed to have a different story and different perceptions of similar experiences--none of which are altogether true and none of which are altogether lies. And when he/she goes to tell about it, pieces of reality will inevitably be missed and left forgotten on the mountain. Emotions will well up and color an event with bias. Egos will peek from behind a boulder and whisper truths and nonsense.

No writer can make sense of all of that, but Krakauer has tried, and largely succeeded, to give the reader an idea of what it was like on Mt. Everest in late spring 1996. He may or may not have retraced every path exactly, but he acts as a good guide. He welcomes the reader to disagree with him and simultaneously makes a bold and convincing case. He admits a myriad of his own mistakes and points out the mistakes of others. I'm impressed mostly with the balanced feel of his account. For example, much is made of Krakauer's portrayal of Anatoli Boukreev's actions on the mountain. Those who read Krakauer as blaming Boukreev for the deaths of some climbers must not have closely read the many times Krakauer praises Boukreev's numerous heroic actions. By telling of both the shameful and heroic actions of Boukreev--all told from Krakauer's self-admitted hypoxic state--I find that Krakauer achieves a kind of truth about both Boukreev and himself.

In the end, for me, the book is about how truth changes states: It's solid and reliable when you start to climb Mt. Everest. And then you climb too high, and the truth becomes slippery and liquid; you're not quite sure and you're not quite in doubt. And then sometimes, the truth changes to a gas, a gyre of contradictions--the terrible beauty of chaos, which you'll never completely remember or entirely forget.

Needs More Catchy Tunes

My kids(5&7) are up and coming pianists. They love to mess around with the piano on their own at different times of the day. They enjoy a few of the songs in this book.

We use several different teaching books including the Teaching Little Fingers to Play- beginning course. But they don't want to just learn music, they want to play music, the real stuff- ASAP! That's the way I learned: pure desire.

I do spend time going over basic music skills, theory and easy finger exercises; however, the bulk of our time and their practice is learning songs. It's mostly rote and ear, but they love to play the catchy, memorable, to them, songs until they have perfected them. Then they show them off to others. They're eager to do this without me urging them on or grinding the lessons into their easily distracted minds- so, I'm running with it, and trying to find music that appeals to them.

There's only a few songs in this book, and the only ones they like are The Siamese Cats, Kiss the Girl and somewhat, Winnie the Pooh. The rest of the songs are too boring for them or a bit obscure.

They include teacher accompaniments and some finger numbering. The songs sound OK and with repeated practice the children get them down fairly quickly. Each child is different and learns as such.

I pencil the ivories with numbers and notes; play the song for them, suggesting fingerings, and let them go- helping them when they ask or when they're in the mood, leaving them alone when they want private time with the instrument.

An updated book with more popular songs sure would be great!
