He restated for modern man those spiritual and ethical doctrines which have given humanity its noblest ideals and most adequate codes of conduct. Not Your Typical Dream Book

Originally published under the title Studies in Dream Symbolism, this book does not reveal anything new under sun of the dream world. Freemason and philosopher Manly P. Hall gives his take, although unique, view on the symbols of dreams. The book discusses the ancient oracles, and past dreamers of ancient Greece and Biblical tales of the psyche. There is no reference of Freud or Jung here, or even other major contributors of dreaming, however, Hall does take a logical approach to understanding your dreams. Its not written in a step by step process, or a how-to guide. Its completely informative. Basically, after one writes their dreams down for dissection, they will take something from their dream and make associations. A rabbit, for instance is fast and it hops. Its small with big ears. These are typical traits of a rabbit, so one may presume that those traits are within yourself, or how you view the world. Hall's writing style, in this book, unlike others I found messy and unorganized. I was unsure of what some of his ideas were as they were not always clear. Although I like Halls work, this was, thus far, my least favorite. I gave it three stars for his approach to dream symbolism and I personally agree that the route to understanding your dreams described here is a credible one.

I'm a big fan of Manly P. Halls books, I've got quite a few and would have everyone if I could - a very may well have if I live long enough... the man is obviously a genius and should be read by anyone in search of the truth... I recommend it, of course!

Mara brings Ancient Egypt to life!

Mara is a wonderful heroine for young girls. Set in the time of Hatshepsut, Pharoah of Egypt, this small novel brings to life a distant era with remarkable clarity. McGraw has crafted her vision of the period around an exciting palace intrigue. The character of Mara, a young slave girl, is an excellent example for young women and it is remarkable to find in a book that was written in the 1950s. If you know a young woman of 9 to 14, give her this book.

This is one of the best books that I have ever read - how fortunate that it is still in print after all these years! I first encountered this excellent novel in 1961. I read it at least 20 times. I was too poor to purchase, so I copied the book out in about 10 school scribblers. True! When my daughter was 10, I bought a copy for her and another for myself.

McGraw's interpretation of the era can easily be faulted, but her sense of "Egypt" cannot. This book sent me on an investigative journey into the subject of Egyptology that has been a distinct pleasure all my life. I highly recommend this wonderful tale.

New generation of readers, meet Mara!

When I was in junior high school, I read this book and loved it. In fact, I read it over and over, and recently sent a copy to my niece as a 12th birthday gift. Mara, the spunky 17-year-old slave girl, is a wonderful role model for adolescent girls: far from perfect (in fact, rather devious), but brave and eventually quite heroic as she risks death rather than betray the people and ideals that she loves. I'm not entirely happy with the fact that Queen Hatshepsut, another feminist heroine of mine, was the villain of this novel. For the record, the real Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for many years of peace and prosperity, and as far as we know, died peacefully of old age. Her stepson (NOT her brother) Thutmose then destroyed her statues and inscriptions in a fit of petulant pique, but did not overthrow her.
Still, who cares? This version makes a wonderful, swashbuckling story, and also provides an excellent introduction to the culture of ancient Egypt for kids who are curious about its history.

An enchanting introduction to the ancient world

This was the first novel I ever read (when I was 12) that transported me to the ancient world. I loved it so much that, many years later, I still have a copy of it on my bookshelf. Mara is a terrific heroine: courageous, imaginative, adventurous, and self confident. However, she also has the ability to be deceptive when she needs to be in order to survive. Unfortunately this is not the bible of wholesaling. Lots of generalities and very little, or any, specifics. Example: When Than writes about mailing lists to use in your direct mail campaigns he never tells us where to secure these lists. And so it goes throughout the book. For $18 is a skip. Where do I get a refund?

Deftly written, engaging and even educational

If anyone deserves to be compared to John McPhee, Tracey Kidder does. His non-fiction prose comes closest to McPhee's in engaging the reader and making the most minute detail seem fascinating.
Aside from the pure pleasure of reading, "House" is also a manual for how and how not to build a house. Every time I have a problem in the construction of my house, I think back to the shabby, confrontational way the builders were treated in "House" and approach my builder with that in mind.

It's the people, stupid...

I read this book years ago and it made a lasting impression.

Reading the reviews, it seems a number of people get and miss the real point simultaneously: people with more money than brains are hell on the rest of us....

A lawyer and shrink build a house. Their lives are all about making a profit from other people's misery. The people designing and building the house simply want to practice their craft and make it a better world by their efforts. No so with the people they wind up enslaved to via contracts and mind games...

In the end, the builders and designers wind up needing lawyers and shrinks to deal with the negative energy dumped on them/directed their way by people with more money than brains.... Irony or tragedy?

Kidder does a good job laying this out. It's too bad some of the people submitting reviews seem to want a different ending.

How things finish up is the way it usually goes: igonorant people willing to work things underhandedly to their percieved advantage are nearly always trouble for everyone else.

The more things change, the more things stay the same...

The first 100 pages ROCK!!

There is a sentence in 'Think and Grow Rich' where Napoleon Hill gives the REAL secret of success. It's only one sentence, and if the reader isn't paying close attention, he will miss it. Napoleon Hill is talking about having a plan to accumulate money, and he writes:-- "a definite plan through which you intend to EXCHANGE services or merchandise in return for the money you are visualizing."

The key word in that sentence is: EXCHANGE.

In the first hundred pages of 'The Closer's Survival Guide', Grant Cardone has really opened my eyes about the word "exchange". What Grant teaches is that "exchange" is what the close is all about!

It's been said that even if you get one idea out of a book, reading it has been worthwhile. The first 100 pages of Grant's book has absolutely changed my paradigm, and I have been involved in hardcore, straight commission sales for a long time. Infact, as of this writing, I have had the book for less than a week, and I have already read the first 100 pages over again three times! FANTASTIC!!

As far as the actual closes in the book, if you've been in sales for a long time you've probably heard a variation of these, but DO YOU USE THEM?

I have added 'The Closer's Survival Guide' to my list of favorite sales books (which are 'The Closers' by Ben Gay and 'You Can't Teach A Kid To Ride A Bike At A Seminar' by David Sandler)

Again, the first 100 pages is worth the price of the book!

I can't believe I requested to cancel my order for this book

Probably the only time in my life that I am happy a vendor ignored my request. I've been in sales for 10+ years and have a substantial library of sales books and many more that I have read with the aid of a library. I have had ups and downs in my sales career results-wise but never really could get consistent good months ever because of some disconnects I was having with really understanding in this area no matter how many books I have read. This is hands down the best book I have ever read on the most important area of the sales process and have put it in my top 5 of MUST HAVE sales books with purchasing the audio program that compliments the book highly recommended. It is that good. I read a review somewhere on Amazon that someone said this book was just all high pressure. Well, it's not high pressure if you have asked and investigated to figure out and the buyer has indicated what he/she wants and have built a solution based on the buyer's feedback. If you have done this, you have earned the right to be enthusiastic and insistent, as the author puts it, on the buyer owning what you put together for them. After all, they told you they wanted it. Just a fantastic piece of work.

2nd only to the Bible if you're in Sales

I have bought this book twice. That should be enough actually right there to let you know how I feel about this material. The first copy I bought grew legs and walked off from a dealership where I used to work. So, when the black Friday special rolled aound I bought the book And the CDs. The CDs have been lent out and only some returned as Everyone that gets a taste of this wants to be able to use them to make money. This is about reasoning with people, overcoming objections, presenting everything in a positive light and CLOSING. It goes along wit hthe statement, "You drive for show and put for dough." Grant reminds us in this book that 20% of our actions make for 100% of our income. In other words, you can know everything about a product, have the absolute best customer service, and even have the prettiest smile out of every other sales consultant, but if you cannot close... you make $0. Period. I bring this book with me to work everyday and take it home every night. If you want to get serious about your lifestyle and your income... Get this book, it's Gold!
